Overview

We are seeking a Data Architect (365)to join a multidisciplinary team supporting the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Program Management Office (PMO). This role is ideal for engineers who are passionate about applying technical expertise to real-world national security challenges and advancing mission-critical capabilities through research, evaluation, and informed decision-making. This position requires U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain a CBP Background Investigation (BI) is required; active CBP BI preferred. This position requires 20% travel that may entail remote and rugged areas.

The Dataverse Data Architect will work closely with CBP stakeholders, program managers, and technical experts to assess technologies, guide development efforts, inform program strategies, and enable effective deployment of integrated systems. This includes both field-focused technical assessments and the development of supporting engineering and programmatic documentation. The ideal candidate has experience with research, development, test, and evaluation (RDT&E), and can bridge the gap between emerging capability and mission utility.

Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and maintain enterprise data architecture solutions across the Microsoft 365 ecosystem.
  • Define data architecture standards, governance models, metadata structures, and information management practices for Microsoft 365 platforms.
  • Assess business requirements and translate them into scalable, secure, and maintainable data architecture designs.
  • Develop conceptual, logical, and physical data models to support business applications, collaboration platforms, reporting, records management, and automation.
  • Design data structures and integration patterns across Microsoft 365 services, including SharePoint Online, Teams, OneDrive, Exchange Online, Microsoft Lists, Power Platform, and Microsoft Graph.
  • Establish information architecture for SharePoint Online, including site structures, content types, metadata, document libraries, lists, permissions, and lifecycle management.
  • Design data integration solutions using Microsoft Graph API, Power Platform connectors, Azure services, and other approved integration tools.
  • Support enterprise reporting and analytics by designing data flows between Microsoft 365, Power BI, Dataverse, Azure Data Lake, Azure SQL, or other approved data platforms.
  • Define and enforce data classification, retention, archival, eDiscovery, records management, and compliance requirements within Microsoft 365.
  • Collaborate with cybersecurity, privacy, records management, legal, business, and technical stakeholders to ensure data architecture aligns with organizational policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Design secure access models using role-based access control, group-based permissions, sensitivity labels, conditional access considerations, and least-privilege principles.
  • Support Microsoft Purview implementation for data governance, information protection, data lifecycle management, audit, compliance, and discovery.
  • Review existing Microsoft 365 data structures and recommend improvements for scalability, usability, security, compliance, and performance.
  • Develop architecture diagrams, data flow diagrams, data dictionaries, metadata models, integration specifications, and architecture decision records.
  • Support migration planning from legacy repositories, file shares, on-premises SharePoint, or other platforms into Microsoft 365.
  • Provide technical guidance to solution architects, developers, administrators, business analysts, and project teams.
  • Support application lifecycle management and environment planning for Microsoft 365-integrated applications and Power Platform solutions.
  • Identify risks, dependencies, constraints, and data quality issues, and recommend mitigation strategies.
Qualifications
  • SENIOR LEVEL: 10+ years of relevant experience and a STEM BS degree or 7 years relevant experience and a MS degree in systems engineering.
  • MID LEVEL: 3-10 years97relevant experience and a STEM BS degree
  • Demonstrated experience designing data architecture solutions within Microsoft 365 environments.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft 365 services, including SharePoint Online, Microsoft Teams, OneDrive, Exchange Online, Microsoft Lists, and Microsoft Purview.
  • Experience developing information architecture for SharePoint Online, including metadata, content types, site structures, document libraries, lists, and permissions.
  • Experience with Microsoft Power Platform, including Power Apps, Power Automate, Power BI, and Dataverse.
  • Experience designing integrations using Microsoft Graph API, REST APIs, Power Platform connectors, Azure Logic Apps, Azure Functions, Azure Data Factory, or similar tools.
  • Understanding of Microsoft Purview capabilities, including data classification, sensitivity labels, retention labels, records management, audit, eDiscovery, and data lifecycle management.
  • Experience designing secure access and permissions models using Microsoft Entra ID, Microsoft 365 Groups, SharePoint permissions, Teams permissions, and role-based access control.
  • Knowledge of data governance, metadata management, records management, privacy, cybersecurity, and compliance practices.
  • Experience supporting reporting, analytics, and data movement between Microsoft 365 and platforms such as Power BI, Azure Data Lake, Azure SQL, Dataverse, or enterprise data warehouses.
  • Experience with data migration, data mapping, data cleansing, and validation from legacy systems into Microsoft 365.
  • Ability to create data models, data flow diagrams, entity relationship diagrams, architecture documentation, and technical design artifacts.
  • Ability to evaluate technical options and recommend fit-for-purpose data storage, collaboration, integration, and governance solutions.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with business users, technical teams, cybersecurity, privacy, records, legal, and governance stakeholders.
  • Bachelor97s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Data Management, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Preferred: Microsoft 365 Certified: Administrator Expert.
  • Preferred: Microsoft Certified: Power Platform Solution Architect Expert.
  • Preferred: Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert.
  • Preferred: Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Engineer Associate.
  • Preferred: Experience with federal, public sector, or regulated environments.
  • Preferred: Experience with Microsoft Cloud for Government, GCC, GCC High, or other secure cloud environments.
  • Preferred: Experience with enterprise content management, records management, or knowledge management programs.
  • U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain a CBP Background Investigation (BI) is required; active CBP BI preferred.

Target salary range: $109,000 - $160,000
