Full Job Description
Marathon Petroleum Corporation is seeking an experienced environmental attorney to join its in-house legal team's Health, Environmental, Safety, Security & Product Quality (HESS&PQ) practice group. This position plays an important role in advancing Marathon's core values of safety and environmental stewardship and in helping the company manage environmental risk, maintain compliance, and promote sound decision-making consistent with Marathon's commitment to protecting people, communities, and the environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provides legal support to one or more of Marathon's operating business units on a wide variety of environmental and regulatory matters. Legal support may include:
    • Advising on compliance with federal, state, and local environmental laws and regulations applicable to Marathon's facilities and day-to-day operations;
    • Advising on environmental aspects of new project development, including environmental permitting;
    • Providing environmental law support and due diligence for corporate transactions, including mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures; and
    • Interacting with federal, state, and local regulatory agencies and assisting with inspections, responses to information requests, and notices of noncompliance;


  • Collaborates with internal clients and stakeholders and with colleagues in Marathon's Law Organization to support legal matters.
  • Participates in continuing legal education programs and other activities as necessary to keep informed of developments in the law, new and proposed statutes and regulations, economic and social issues and other matters of interest to the company and the energy industry.
  • Coordinates and assists in developing the company's advocacy positions on future legislative and regulatory matters and may participate in various trade organizations in support of the administrative rulemaking process.
  • Develops and implements programs, conducts presentations, and participates in other training activities for company leaders and employees regarding company policies and procedures relating to environmental compliance and substantive environmental law topics.
  • Develops subject matter expertise in one or more areas of environmental law and policy, and acts as a resource to others.
  • Conducts legal research or oversees research of support staff to support development of legal work product and delivery of legal counsel to clients.
  • Travel up to 10%

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Juris Doctorate degree required.
  • Current license to practice law in a U.S. state, member in good standing. Continued employment will be conditioned upon obtaining and maintaining membership in Ohio or other State Bar.
  • 5 or more years of relevant legal experience.
  • Experience in the following areas is a plus, but not required:
    • Laws and regulations concerning transportation of hazardous materials, including those administered by the U.S. Department of Transportation (i.e., FMCSA, FRA, and PHMSA) and state equivalents.
    • Law and regulations concerning personal and process safety (i.e., OSHA and state equivalents).
    • Clean Water Act permitting and compliance, including NPDES permitting, Section 401/404 permitting, and SPCC plans.


SKILLS:
  • Subject matter expertise in one or more substantive areas of environmental law.
  • Demonstrated experience identifying and resolving legal issues quickly and effectively.
  • Curiosity about and willingness to learn technical aspects of the Company's facilities, operations, and products, and new and emerging areas of environmental law and policy.
  • Ability to learn and teach others about complex subject matters.
  • Comfortable and proficient in providing independent and direct counsel to clients, reserving collaboration with more senior attorneys for complex legal challenges.
  • Effectively manages legal risk in area of subject matter coverage.
  • Ability to juggle multiple matters and effectively prioritize work to ensure completion in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Strong people skills and a collaborative, team-oriented attitude. Ability to maintain positive and effective relationships with other members of the Law Organization as well as management and staff of the Company and external parties.
