Full Job Description
Basic Function

HF Sinclair in Dallas, Tx is seeking a Environmental Counsel who will assist the legal department with litigation, environmental, health and safety (EHS) matters and with other duties as may be assigned from time to time. Provides guidance for various legal issues and matters relating to litigation, discovery, and EHS functions.

Job Duties

  • Assists in managing a docket of general litigation and environmental related matters.
  • Assists with discovery responsibilities on cases and matters working with other attorneys.
  • Develops litigation strategy and supervises implementation of the strategy by attending depositions, hearings and trials.
  • Assists with EHS matters and projects, including legal research related to EHS matters.
  • Works closely cross-functionally to advise on legal implications of litigation and EHS matters.
  • Plans and develops solutions to existing or potential legal problems, and advises management and employees concerning legal rights and obligations.
  • Interfaces with, and manages, outside counsel on various litigation matters and EHS matters in an efficient and cost-effective manner as needed to compliment the internal legal resources.
  • Participates in continuing legal education programs and other activities as necessary to keep informed of developments in the law, new and proposed statutes and regulations, economic and social issues and other matters of interest to the Company and the energy industry
Special assignments or tasks assigned to the employee by his/her superior, as determined from time to time in the supervisors sole and complete discretion

Experience

  • Minimum of five (5) years experience as a litigator at a top tier law firm, public corporation or regulatory agency; Demonstrated litigation or regulatory work experience
  • Strong academic credentials and a stable work history
  • Reputation for high ethical standards and integrity
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
  • Experience with litigation and administrative/judicial enforcement matters; experience as an EHS litigator is preferred
  • Experience managing a large docket of cases and working with federal or state government agencies
  • Knowledge of EHS statutes and regulations applicable to the petroleum refining industry
  • Experience counseling business and operation managers on compliance with EHS laws and regulations.


Education Level

  • Minimum of a Jurisprudence Doctorate Degree from an American Bar Association accredited law school is required.


Required Skills

Advanced legal drafting and analytical skills; strong organizational skills, advanced reading and writing skills; strong interpersonal, problem solving, research and document review, and word-processing skills. Licensed and in good standing with a state bar is required (admission to the State Bar of Texas is strongly preferred). Ability to effectively communicate with others at all levels of the organization and outside counsel, both written and verbal communication. Strong public speaking skills along with presentation skills. Extremely responsive to a high volume of diverse requests. Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team, self-motivated, organized team player who works well in a high-energy and fast-paced environment. Cooperative and encourages collaboration and builds understanding; ability to find common ground and solve problems, and who owns their own projects and commitments.

Supervisory/Managerial Responsibility

None.

Work Conditions

Office based with travel up to 20% by land and air required. Subject to all weather and varying road conditions. Petroleum refinery and out-of-doors environment including but not limited to chemicals, pressure vessels, tanks, and rotating equipment.

Physical Requirements

Job conditions require standing, walking, sitting, talking or hearing, making visual inspections, making precise hand and finger movements, lifting or carrying up to 25 lbs., pushing or pulling up to 25 lbs., perceiving color differences, required to wear personal protective equipment as needed (beards are not permitted).
