ControllerShadow Wood Country ClubEstero, FLAbout the RoleWe are seeking an experienced, detail-oriented Controller to oversee the Club's day-to-day accounting operations and ensure the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of its financial reporting. Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller is responsible for managing the accounting department while maintaining efficient financial processes that support the Club's daily operations.
The Controller oversees all core accounting functions, including general ledger accounting, month-end and year-end close, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, fixed assets, bank reconciliations, cash management, budgeting support, audit coordination, and tax compliance. This position is responsible for maintaining strong internal controls, ensuring compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), applicable tax regulations, and Club policies, while producing timely and accurate financial information for management and the Board of Directors.
The Controller will also support the annual budgeting process, assist with cash flow management, and coordinate the annual financial statement audit.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on accounting professional with strong technical accounting skills, excellent organizational abilities, and a commitment to continuous process improvement. Success in this role requires attention to detail, sound judgment, and the ability to effectively manage multiple priorities while delivering accurate financial information in a dynamic private club environment.

Key Responsibilities- Reconciles all bank, asset, and liability accounts on a monthly basis.
- Maintains the fixed asset subledger, posts related entries, and reconciles to the ledger on a monthly basis.
- Responsible for overseeing the bi-weekly payroll process. Reviews and approves bi-weekly payroll and reconciles all benefit cost deductions.
- Reviews of A/R, A/P batches, reconciliations, and general ledger postings completed by the accounting staff to ensure accuracy and compliance.
- Records and reconciles all required membership related transactions including posting of joining and transfer fees, set-up and reconciliation of all reoccurring bills, work closely with Membership Director to ensure accurate and timely recording of all membership related transactions
- Direct or participates in physical inventory counts, verifies the integrity of inventory valuations, and investigates unusual variances
- Oversee employee benefit administration, assists with employee benefit on-boarding and administration, participate in the seasonal employee on and off-boarding processes, participate in administration of the H2B program
- Oversees Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable functions and assists the Assistant Controller as needed.
- Mentors and develops the Assistant Controller and other accounting and administrative staff as appropriate, providing guidance and support for professional growth.
- Provides guidance and support to accounting administrative staff, oversee daily operations
- Leads the monthly and annual financial closing process and adheres to specific deadlines.
- Prepares monthly closing documents for CFO and GM/COO review and approval.
- Assists with the timely preparation of the monthly financial reports and related supplementary schedules.
- Prepare and file monthly sales tax returns.
- Assists CFO and department heads with developing annual operating budgets.
- Proactively solves problems and develops and proposes solutions to problems as they occur.
- Assists the CFO with identifying and documenting internal controls to safeguard funds, all matters related to annual audits, and preparing other accounting reports as directed by the CFO.
- Reviews all membership applications, resignations, and transfers, ensuring proper documentation and compliance with Club bylaws, and submits to the CFO and GM/COO for final approval.
- Performs other appropriate tasks as assigned by the CFO.
- Furthers his/her continued development by participating in appropriate seminars and conferences as approved by the CFO.
Candidate Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or other related field (or equivalent)
- 5 to 7 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in the private club or a related industry
- Detail-oriented with strong organization and documentation skills
- Proven success in managing employee relations, HR operations, and benefits
- CPA, CHAE, or similar professional certification preferred
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
- An evident passion for high-level member service and hospitality is required.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Excel.
