About the Role
This is a full-time, in-person role at our El Segundo facility. As you will be working at an early-stage deep tech startup, this role will span many different tasks. You will need to be a self-starter and be adaptable to performing many different jobs. As the first Stress Engineer, you'll lay the foundation for and own the structural analysis of Hybron's fiber-reinforced composites, using a novel material construction. You'll build and validate advanced FEA models, guide design and material choices, and ensure parts meet demanding aerospace, defense, and energy requirements. Your work will bridge simulation, testing, and manufacturing, directly shaping how our technology is applied and optimized for mission-critical applications like artillery shells and aerospace structures.

Working in a high-growth company, you will be wearing many hats: project management, requirements identification, simulation/analysis, product design, testing design, test execution, quality inspection, cross-team collaboration, customer engagement, and more.

As the first stress engineer on the team, there will be significant opportunity to build and lead Hybron's composites structural analysis team, with pathways to a manager role, director role, and beyond.
  • Make key decisions and spearhead initiatives that will directly shape Hybron's simulation capabilities and methodology
  • Identify and execute on developing/integrating strategic technological capabilities
  • Manage a team of structural engineers for product and technology development
  • Contribute to IP and novel analysis techniques
  • Assist with technical business development efforts
  • Spearhead, oversee, and deliver on large technology development initiatives

What we're looking for
  • Must be a U.S. Person pursuant to EAR and ITAR definitions
  • Ability to work in-person at our facility in El Segundo
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering or science field (Composites, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Manufacturing, Materials Science, Polymer Science, etc.)
  • 3+ years of industry experience in composites stress analysis
  • Demonstrated experience in building and refining an FEA model for a novel material or composition
  • Ability to build up an entire FEA system, including software selection and setup, parameter selection, and initial testing and validation
  • Ability to utilize FEA to design and optimize composite geometries to minimize weight and optimize performance
  • Ability to design mechanical test methods for coupon, representative part, and final part geometries
  • Ability to oversee the execution of these tests, ideally with experience in performing the tests themselves
  • Experience with failure analysis and root cause analysis
  • Strong CAD proficiency for part, assembly, and drawing creation with GD&T
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with a drive to deliver on ambitious schedules, even and especially if unconventional & creative solutions are necessary to do so
  • Thrives in cross-functional organizations with strong communication and collaboration

Nice to Haves
  • Experience with simulating both chopped fiber materials and continuous fiber layups
  • Experience with Abaqus simulation software
  • Experience with thermal simulations
  • Composites manufacturing experience
  • Experience in the Aerospace or Defense industry
  • Experience simulating projectiles under high g-loads
  • Experience with creating and presenting business cases to upper management
  • Experience working at or leading a small company/business, or with small teams

Compensation and Schedule
  • $138,000 - $249,000 per year
  • Significant stock options in the company
