Overview

Under direction of the AVP, Communications, the Communication Manager will be responsible for day-to-day external and internal communications that promote the MJHS mission, vision, core values, programs, services and people. Responsibilities include pitching stories and securing news coverage; developing written content to be disseminated via various distribution channels; seeking, supporting and managing community event opportunities; cultivating and seeking opportunities for MJHS spokespeople and influencers; writing and submitting awards nominations and journal ads; supporting media training; proofreading, copyediting; maintaining media lists; and monitoring MJHS and competitor coverage.

Responsibilities
  • Assist AVP, Communications with the implementation of a multi-faceted communications plan that supports MJHS system as a whole and each line of business
  • Manage the pitch/editorial/events calendar and collaborate with social media coordinator to plan content roll-out across social media platforms
  • Research, cultivate and maintain media relationships with key reporters, editors, producers and bookers, as well as pitch news stories
  • Help identify, cultivate, prepare and support MJHS spokespeople and influencers for disseminating MJHS key messages
  • Responsibility: Use media monitoring software and other services for ongoing tracking and reporting
  • Draft and refine communications content, including news releases, newsletter copy, talking points, backgrounders, social media, internal website content and other deliverables as assigned
  • Assist with crisis communications, if and as needed
  • In coordination with social media coordinator, help conceptualize, script, direct and produce video content that can be used for pitches and online content
  • Responsibility: Manage the process for capturing and organizing photo/video consent forms and images
  • Help ensure brand consistency across messaging, collateral and channels
  • Serve as primary lead for community events such as parades, walks and other public activities, plus provide ongoing support for fundraising events, campaigns and other organizational efforts
  • Find opportunities to adapt marketing materials for media pitches and opportunities
  • Engage in special projects, tracking monthly invoices and other duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in public relations, journalism, communications or related field
  • 4-6 years of relevant experience working in journalism, communications, public relations, brand management or related fields
  • Experience with AP Stylebook as well as media monitoring, metrics, tracking, analyzing and reporting news coverage
  • Content generation expertise for social media platforms including but not limited to Facebook, Instagram, Threads, LinkedIn, Pinterest and YouTube
  • Strong proofreading and editing skills
  • Able to exercise good judgment and maintain confidentiality with critical and sensitive information
  • Inquisitive with strong organizational and critical thinking skills, as well as natural ability to positively connect with others
  • Possess event planning skills and flexibility to occasionally support evening and weekend events
  • Ability to work with a highly collaborative team, take initiative and oversee multiple projects simultaneously while managing different priorities
  • Experience with photography, video editing and digital asset management platforms are a plus
