Overview
The Cloud Engineer is responsible for the administration, reliability, security, and continuous improvement of Yale University’s cloud platforms and supporting services. This position helps ensure cloud environments provide the availability, performance, security, and operational capabilities required to support University workloads.
The Cloud Engineer works independently and collaboratively with infrastructure, security, application, research, and other technology teams to implement and support cloud solutions across public and hybrid cloud environments. The role develops and maintains automation and Infrastructure as Code (IaC), supports cloud networking and identity services, troubleshoots complex technical issues, and helps operationalize cloud technologies and services.
The position also provides technical consultation to researchers, faculty, staff, and IT partners to understand requirements and assist with the implementation of secure, reliable, and scalable cloud solutions.
The successful candidate will have experience in the following areas:
Required Skills and Abilities
1.Strong understanding of cloud computing technologies, architecture concepts, andoperational best practices.
2.Demonstrated experience administering and supporting public cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
3.Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences.
4.Ability to collaborate effectively across teams and technical disciplines. Ability to create clear technical documentation and operational procedures.
5.Ability and willingness to learn new technologies, cross-train team members, and operationalize new cloud services and capabilities.
Preferred Experience
1.Experience supporting cloud environments within higher education, research,healthcare, or similarly complex organizations. Experience working directly with researchers or research computing environments.
2.Experience supporting workloads subject to regulatory or contractual security requirements.
3.Experience with cloud financial management, cost optimization, or FinOps
practices.
4.Experience with observability or cloud security platforms such as Dynatrace,
Datadog, or Wiz.
5.Experience supporting enterprise-scale Azure, AWS, or GCP environments.
Principal Responsibilities
1. Design, analyze, code, test, debug, document and maintain moderately complex enterprise systems; develop enhancements that enable a positive end-user experience. 2. Research, analyze, design, document, and modify software specifications throughout the production life cycle. 3. Create and implement project specifications/plans for projects with straightforward inter-dependency with other systems and/or projects. 4. Modify moderately complex application programs from detailed specifications. 5. Develop and validate test routines and schedules, evaluate code to ensure that it is valid, is properly structured, meets industry standards and is compatible with browsers, devices, or operating systems. Required Education and Experience Bachelor's Degree and four years of experience or equivalent education and experience. Skills and Abilities Knowledge of information security concepts, principles, relevant tools, and standards. Developed analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Developed interpersonal, written, communication, presentation, and organizational skills. Familiarity with systems analysis methods and techniques.
