Full Job Description
The Role:

ElevateBio is looking for a Cloud Engineer to join our Infrastructure Operations Center (IOC) as the right hand to our Principal Engineer of Cloud Systems & Networks. ElevateBio's cloud, network, and systems environments are already established and running in production, supported by a network of trusted contractors and service providers. This role exists to be a strong internal partner inside that model - collaborating closely with our external partners, owning workstreams end-to-end, and making sound tactical decisions in the moment so the work moves forward without bottlenecking on the Principal Engineer. We're looking for someone who is naturally curious about AI, uses AI tools as a regular part of how they work, and is excited to help bring that mindset into how IOC operates. The role is hybrid out of our Waltham, MA headquarters.

Here's What You'll Do:

If you're a builder who hates sitting idle and learns fast across cloud, network, systems, and AI, you'll feel at home here. You'll be trusted to make the call inside live workstreams, working hands-on alongside our trusted contractors and service providers - and helping push our team to use AI in smarter, more ambitious ways. It's a seat with real room to grow as IOC grows.

Operate and maintain ElevateBio's existing AWS environment alongside the Principal Engineer - monitoring, patching, access control, backup/restore, and routine changes - keeping production healthy and predictable.
  • Act as the internal point-of-contact for our contractors and service providers: scope work, review deliverables, hold partners to quality and timelines, and integrate their output into our environment.
  • Drive workstreams end-to-end and make sound tactical decisions in the moment - choosing between reasonable options, unblocking work, and escalating only what truly needs the Principal Engineer's involvement.
  • Administer Windows and Linux systems across cloud and on-prem environments, including patching, monitoring, backup, and access management.
  • Support networking operations: VPN, firewall changes, DNS, segmentation, and site-to-cloud connectivity, under the architecture set by the Principal Engineer.
  • Contribute to our AWS infrastructure-as-code in AWS CDK, working in close collaboration with the service provider who co-owns the codebase, and steadily extending coverage and quality of what we manage as code.
  • Bring AI into the daily flow of the work - using AI coding assistants, copilots, and agentic tools to move faster, and helping identify where AI can responsibly improve IOC operations.
  • Maintain runbooks, documentation, and on-call practices so what we operate is repeatable and well-understood across internal and external collaborators.
  • Partner with security, OT, application, and scientific computing teams on day-to-day requests, with awareness of GxP and validated-system expectations where they apply.
  • Grow into a trusted second on the team - taking deeper ownership of specific domains and helping shape standards as IOC scales.

Requirements:

3-7 years of hands-on experience as a cloud, infrastructure, DevOps, or systems engineer.
  • Strong working knowledge of AWS core services (EC2, S3, VPC, IAM, RDS, Route 53, CloudWatch) and comfort operating production environments.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS CDK (TypeScript or Python) - comfortable reading, contributing to, and reviewing CDK codebases.
  • Solid Linux administration skills (RHEL/Ubuntu) plus working proficiency with Windows Server administration and Active Directory.
  • Networking fundamentals you can apply day-to-day: routing, subnets, firewalls, VPN, and DNS.
  • Practical scripting ability in Python, PowerShell, or Bash.
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with external contractors, service providers, or MSPs - scoping work, reviewing deliverables, and getting good outcomes through partners.
  • A clear bias for action and sound judgment under uncertainty: able to make tactical calls in the middle of a workstream and explain the reasoning afterward.
  • Genuine enthusiasm for AI, and current, regular use of AI tools (e.g., AI coding assistants, chat-based assistants, agentic tools) as part of how you already work.
  • Reliability mindset - pride in clean handoffs, good documentation, and quiet production environments.
  • Nice to have: experience in a GxP, GMP, or otherwise regulated environment (21 CFR Part 11, computer system validation).
  • Nice to have: exposure to scientific computing, lab informatics, or biotech/pharma IT.
  • Nice to have: AWS certifications (Solutions Architect, SysOps Administrator, Developer) or equivalent.

The budgeted range for this position is $105,000 - $145,000. This range is a good faith estimate of the expected salary range for this position, based on a wide range of factors including qualifications, experience and training, operational and business needs and other considerations permitted by law.
