Full Job Description
What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking an Engineering and Operations Systems Engineer. In this role, you will apply operational systems engineering to support the design, integration, and delivery of cable and interconnect solutions. You will help translate customer needs into clear requirements, support cable assembly design and documentation, coordinate interfaces across mechanical/electrical stakeholders, and ensure designs are verifiable and ready for build, test, and deployment. You'll track technical progress, support verification/validation (V&V) planning and evidence collection, and escalate issues that require additional technical depth or program leadership.

On any given day, you may be called upon to:
  • Support design and integration of cable/interconnect assemblies (connectors, pinouts, signal definitions, timing/voltage constraints, mass/fit, labeling)
  • Develop, document, and maintain component/subsystem requirements and interface definitions for cable-related hardware
  • Coordinate with electrical, mechanical, manufacturing, and test teams to ensure designs are buildable, testable, and aligned to customer expectations
  • Define and document acceptance criteria and verification approaches; support V&V by collecting objective evidence for deliverables
  • Track technical risks, interfaces, and issues; develop mitigation and contingency plans with stakeholders
  • Participate in technical reviews and readiness activities; ensure required documentation is complete through the lifecycle
  • Support logistics/deployment planning and preparation of user or technician training materials as needed

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range

$87,400 - $168,800

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, science, or a related technical field, or equivalent (AS + 4 years or no degree + 8 years)
  • Experience with:
    • Systems engineering practices: requirements, interfaces, risk management, and verification planning/documentation
    • Documenting technical information (requirements, interfaces, acceptance criteria, verification evidence)
  • An active DOE Q clearance, or equivalent is required to start

Qualifications We Desire

  • Master's degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or other related engineering/science field)
  • Experience with cable or harness design support (connectors, pin mapping, signal constraints, routing considerations, labeling)
  • Supporting hardware design and integration in a cross-disciplinary environment (electrical/mechanical/manufacturing/test)
  • Experience supporting configuration management and design reviews (requirements-to-design-to-verification traceability)
  • Experience developing deployment guidance, work instructions, or training materials for technicians/end users
  • Strong communication skills and ability to coordinate across teams and with customers

About Our Team

The Interconnects Department designs develops tests and qualifies high voltage, RF, flat-flex, multi-wire, and fiber optic cable assemblies. We utilize the Realize Product Subsystem (RPSS) to develop Mark Quality product that covers the complete product realization cycle of requirements, design, development, specification, qualification, procurement, delivery and stockpile support through our partners at the National Security Campus (NSC).

We employ defect-prevention strategies to gain an understanding of design margin during the development cycle. The department's capabilities include the ability to address multiple challenging requirements related to meeting high reliability numbers over extremely long life, radiation tolerance, nuclear safety requirements, and size & weight restrictions.

Posting Duration

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of three (3) calendar days, including the 'posting date'. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

About Sandia National Laboratories

The Sandia National Laboratories is one of three National Nuclear Security Administration research and development laboratories in the United States, managed and operated privately by the National Technology and Engineering Solutions of Sandia. Their primary mission is to develop, engineer, and test the non-nuclear components of nuclear weapons and high technology. Headquartered on Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico, it also has a campus in Livermore, California, next to Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and a test facility in Waimea, Kauai, Hawaii. It is Sandia's mission to maintain the reliability and surety of nuclear weapon systems, conduct research and development in arms control and nonproliferation technologies, and investigate methods for the disposal of the United States' nuclear weapons program's hazardous waste. Other missions include research and development in energy and environmental programs, as well as the surety of critical national infrastructures. In addition, Sandia is home to a wide variety of research including computational biology, mathematics, materials science, alternative energy, psychology, MEMS, and cognitive science initiatives. Sandia formerly hosted ASCI Red, one of the world's fastest supercomputers until its decommission in 2006, and now hosts ASCI Red Storm, originally known as Thor's Hammer. Sandia is also home to the Z Machine. The Z Machine is the largest X-ray generator in the world and is designed to test materials in conditions of extreme temperature and pressure. It is operated by Sandia National Laboratories to gather data to aid in computer modeling of nuclear weapons. In December 2016, it was announced that National Technology and Engineering Solutions of Sandia, under the direction of Honeywell International, would take over the management of Sandia National Laboratories starting on May 1, 2017. Educational opportunities are conducted in collaboration with university students through several programs, including the Securing Top Academic Research & Talent at Historically Black Colleges and Universities Program and the Sandia University Partnerships Network.
