Full Job Description
As a Software Development Manager for ELB Data Plane, you will lead a team building the systems that route, scale, and deliver every byte of customer traffic through Elastic Load Balancing. You will own technical vision, drive operational excellence, and grow top engineering talent - all while shipping next-generation capabilities at internet scale.
Key job responsibilities
- Lead a team of engineers in designing, building, and operating ELB data plane systems at massive scale
- Define technical vision and roadmap for data plane capabilities including routing, scaling, and deployment
- Drive operational excellence across the team, maintaining high availability for a service that underpins millions of customer workloads
- Partner with senior AWS leaders, product managers, and cross-functional teams to align on priorities and deliver business outcomes
- Hire, develop, and retain top engineering talent while fostering a culture of ownership and innovation
- Make sound trade-offs between short-term delivery and long-term architectural investments
- Establish goals, prioritize work across your team and partner teams, and focus on the inputs that drive the most impactful results
A day in the life
You will split your time between technical leadership and people development. On any given day, you might review a system design for a new scaling mechanism, meet with a principal engineer to align on architecture direction, conduct a 1:1 with a direct report on career growth, and join an operational review to assess service health. Your stakeholders include senior AWS executives, partner service teams, and customers ranging from startups to the largest enterprises in the world.

The ELB Data Plane team builds and operates the software that processes every byte of customer traffic flowing through Elastic Load Balancing. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 3+ years of engineering team management experience
- 5+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience
- 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
- Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers
The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
