Full Job Description
About the Role

Interactive News Technology is a team of developer-journalists embedded in the New York Times newsroom. We power new story forms and build tools for newsgathering, while also supporting breaking news, exclusive reporting and major events.

We're looking for a curious and creative associate software engineer to pioneer new features in newsroom projects used by hundreds of NYT journalists and millions of readers.

You might create systems that power real-time data for our elections and polling coverage, collaborate on newsroom AI product development, write software behind document research, reader submission collection, or contribute to projects powered by reader data like quizzes, news games and WordleBot. We continue to develop new ways to empower our journalists with transformative tools and story forms, so we invite you to bring new ideas for news technology products that don't exist yet.

We work in JavaScript, using Node.js, TypeScript, React and sometimes Svelte. To store and analyze data, we use PostgreSQL databases. We rely on hosted Google Cloud services and serverless technologies, and A.I. tools such as Cursor and Claude.

On a daily basis, you'll work as part of a project team taking a collaborative approach to developing features and application architectures. You will be a strong software engineer who demonstrates journalistic and editorial thinking, and a curious and creative approach to designing and developing tools.

The Interactive News Technology team works as part of the newsroom, but this is not a data visualization or reporting role.

Responsibilities:
  • Prototype new ideas to help our journalists report and tell stories
  • Contribute to software features from technical design through live operation
  • Participate in project research and technical design as part of your project team
  • Build features that are reliable, scalable and secure
  • Work with newsroom desks to explore bold reporting avenues relating to data, documents or novel story forms
  • Collaborate with teams across the newsroom including A.I. Initiatives, Data Journalism, and Graphics to create efficient and usable workflows
  • Ensure that systems provide clear and accurate information to reporters and readers
  • Sometimes work on tight deadlines around the news
  • Take part in skill-building and learning opportunities to grow your technical and analytic skills
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • You will report to an Engineering Manager and Project Editor

Basic Qualifications:

  • At least 1 year of experience building web applications in JavaScript (TypeScript preferred)
  • Experience contributing to newsgathering, reporting, editing, or news presentation processes
  • Experience taking a technical project from concept to completion, contributing to concept definition, technical design, and technical implementation
  • Experience working as part of a team to develop software
  • Experience with A.I. software development best practices
