Associate Director of Clinical Informatics

Position Description

The Associate Director of Clinical Informatics will provide administrative leadership, operational oversight, and support of clinical information systems that support patient care, education, and research for the University Eye Center (UEC), the patient care facility of SUNY College of Optometry. The Associate Director will also serve as an operational owner for clinical systems and a bridge between clinical stakeholders and the Office of Information Technology Services (ITS), ensuring systems are secure, compliant, reliable, and optimized for high-quality patient care. Reporting directly to the Chief Information Officer (CIO), the Associate Director will partner closely with the Vice President for Clinical Affairs to advance clinical technology strategy, optimize patient care operations, support regulatory compliance initiatives, and align informatics priorities with the University Eye Center's clinical and strategic objectives. The Associate Director will play a critical role in aligning clinical technology operations with institutional information security, privacy, and risk management standards in an academic healthcare environment, while balancing hands-on system oversight with strategic leadership and organizational alignment.

This position is a Managerial/Confidential appointment in the Unclassified Service of the State of New York and is not represented by a collective bargaining unit.

Duties and responsibilities include:

• Clinical Systems Operations & Oversight: Lead the administration, performance, availability, and support of all clinical technology platforms used within the UEC to ensure efficient and uninterrupted patient care
• Clinical Informatics & Workflow Support: Partner with UEC to optimize technology-enabled clinical workflows, improve user experience, and support the effective adoption of clinical systems
• Security, Privacy & Risk Management: Ensure that technologies used within the UEC comply with cybersecurity, privacy, regulatory, and institutional requirements while proactively managing technology risks
• Vendor, Contract & Financial Management: Manage vendor relationships, technology contracts, and licensing activities to maximize operational effectiveness and value
• Governance & Collaboration: Serve as a liaison between the UEC and institutional stakeholders to ensure clinical technologies align with organizational standards, priorities, and strategic objectives
• Clinical Technology Policy, Compliance & Strategy: Develop and oversee policies and procedures related to clinical information systems, HIPAA security and privacy, and regulatory compliance. Manage access to highly confidential patient and institutional information, exercising independent judgment to ensure appropriate security, compliance, and operational effectiveness. Advise senior leadership on clinical technology strategy, risk management, and resource priorities.

The Associate Director of Clinical Informatics requires a Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Health Informatics, Computer Science, or related field; Additionally, a minimum of 5-8 years of experience supporting clinical applications in a healthcare or academic clinical environment; Demonstrate experience with electronic health record/patient management systems and specialty clinical technologies; Working knowledge of HIPAA and clinical privacy requirements, healthcare cybersecurity concepts, and clinical vendor and contract management; Proficiency in Microsoft 365 Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

Preferred qualifications include experience in an optometry, ophthalmology, or specialty clinical practice in a higher-education clinical setting, academic health center, or teaching clinic; Experience supporting technology training, system upgrades, or optimization initiatives;

The salary range is $125,000 to $160,000. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. SUNY College of Optometry offers a comprehensive benefits package, including: 21 days of annual leave per year and 13 paid holidays per year.
