The City of Everett employs six (6) Engine Companies (1 swing engine), two (2) Ladder Companies (1 swing ladder), three (3) ALS medic units, and three (3) BLS aid units supervised by a shift battalion chief and shift medical services officer. There are six (6) fire stations located throughout the city. There are 191 budgeted uniformed positions. In 2024 the Department was dispatched to approximately 27,500 incidents.
JOB DESCRIPTION:The City of Everett is accepting applications for the position of Assistant Fire Chief, Operations. Under the direction of the Fire Chief, administer and coordinate the activities, personnel, resources and operations of the Fire Department. Responsibilities include strategic policy and problem solving as well as operational aspects of the Department. The Assistant Fire Chief assumes the duties of the Fire Chief in their absence. Work is reviewed through conferences, reports and effectiveness of Department activities and programs. Supervision is exercised over a staff of commissioned officers, professional and administrative employees.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:- Assist the Fire Chief in establish departmental goals, objectives and priorities, set goals and performance criteria for all divisions and program areas; monitor and measure attainment of objectives and goals and implement corrective actions when necessary.
- Assist the Fire Chief in providing creative leadership and vision for the Department, analyze situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action. Delegate and monitor tasks and projects consistent with established departmental goals and objectives.
- Plan, organize, direct and control the activities and personnel of the Everett Fire Department.
- Formulate and develop long and short-range plans, goals and objectives for the Department; assess progress and performance in achieving established goals.
- Develop and implement departmental policies, rules, regulations and general orders designed to prevent and minimize the loss of life and property in major emergency situations.
- Plan and organize Fire Department operation and activities with respect to equipment, apparatus and personnel to assure maximum efficiency and effectiveness.
- Assure the maintenance and repair of Fire Department equipment, apparatus and facilities; evaluate departmental requirements and recommend appropriate purchases of supplies and equipment.
- Review reports of subordinates to assure continuity and content; evaluate methods and procedures and recommend changes for increased efficiency of the Department.
- Communicate with city officials, community leaders and outside agencies to resolve problems, coordinate activities, exchange information and provide expertise; respond to questions and resolve complaints regarding Department operations and services.
- Analyze, review and supervise the preparation of comprehensive reports and records related to personnel, property and operations of the Department.
- Attend and participate in a variety of meetings, boards and committees; provide information to civic groups regarding departmental functions and activities.
- Prepare, present and administer the annual Department budget.
- Formulate and prepare plans for continual improvement of the Department in fire prevention, fire suppression and emergency medical services; recommend laws and ordinances; provide special analysis and reports.
- Assume command of the overall operation or the Fire Department in the absence of the Chief or as designated.
- Develop standard operating procedures and function as staff or command at major incidents.
- Perform related work and special projects as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:A combination of education and related experience may substitute for education requirements.
- Bachelor's Degree in Fire Science, Public Administration or related field and
- Minimum of 5 years increasingly responsible administrative or supervisory experience in a municipal fire department
- Minimum of 5 years field experience as a company officer or greater.
- Completion of National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer Program is highly desirable.
- Completion of a relevant master's degree is highly desirable.
- Possession of and the ability to maintain for the duration of employment, a valid, unrestricted Washington State Driver License.
- Possession of, or ability to acquire Washington State EMT Certification.

Benefit eligibility for the employee and eligible dependents begins the first day of the month following the employee's hire date. Premiums for Delta Dental and HMA Vision are paid by the City on behalf of the employee and eligible dependents. Premiums for Life, LTD, Accidental Death & Dismemberment coverage on behalf of the employee are paid by the City. Premiums for HMA Medical and Kaiser Medical coverage are shared by the employee.
An additional benefit is available through a
Voluntary Life Insurance program for the employee, spouse, and children. The employee pays the premiums for this benefit.
It is mandatory that both the City and the employee pay into the
Department of Retirement Systems for Washington State.
Three voluntary
Deferred Compensation programs are available for employee participation.

Flexible Spending Plan is available that allows you to make pre-tax contributions for Health Care reimbursement and/or Dependent Care reimbursement for those expenses not covered by medical.
