Job Description

The Global Risk & Compliance (GRC) organization serves as American Express' independent risk management function. GRC maintains the enterprise risk framework, provides oversight and challenge, and monitors key risks. By embedding risk discipline into strategy and operations, GRC enables responsible growth, innovation, and long-term value creation while protecting customers and shareholders.

Responsibilities

Regulatory Change Management
  • Collaborate with internal counsel to document and maintain process and procedure for the end-to-end process of regulatory change management.
  • Partner with colleagues across multiple lines of business to communicate applicable regulatory changes and manage regulatory change projects.
  • Provide support to Line of Business Compliance Officers, Legal Entity Compliance Officers, and Subject Matter Experts relating to regulatory change management processes, procedures, and standards.
  • Execute a strategy to maintain and expand laws, rules, and regulation bundles.
  • Communicate with Subject Matter Experts to integrate and maintain the laws, rules, regulation summaries into the Enterprise Risk Taxonomy.
  • Leverage various compliance technology systems.
  • Recognize when a risk, issue, or incident requires escalation to higher levels of management or external partners, facilitating timely decision-making and appropriate mitigation actions across the organization.
  • Application of relevant general laws, regulations, and standards affecting risk management of large banks to include regulatory frameworks and expectations.


Laws, Rules, and Regulations Library Management
  • Support the management and maintenance of an inventory of globally applicable laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Assist Internal Counsel throughout the regulatory lifecycle, including regulatory change alert category identification, requirements development, and inventory maintenance.
  • Utilize GenAI tools to bundle legal authority into precise Requirements and discover more effective and efficient ways of working.
  • Partner with Internal Counsel to finalize and maintain draft bundle summaries.
  • Review change alerts and assess if changes impact the laws, rules, and regulations inventory.
  • Collaborate with Legal, Compliance, and third-party vendor teams to ensure the accuracy and completeness of the regulatory inventory scope and content.
  • Leverage compliance technology systems to complete and enhance day-to-day tasks.
  • Assist in the development and updates of metrics to monitor inventory status, providing reporting on legal requirements, regulatory gaps, and implementation progress.


Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant professional experience in Compliance, Legal, Risk Management, Regulatory Affairs, Governance, Internal Audit, or a related function within financial services or another highly regulated industry.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting regulatory change management, laws/rules/regulations inventories, regulatory obligations or requirements, compliance governance, or comparable regulatory processes.
  • Working knowledge of laws, regulations, regulatory frameworks, and supervisory expectations applicable to large financial institutions, with the ability to understand and apply regulatory concepts within a risk and compliance environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to review, analyze, organize, and synthesize complex regulatory, legal, business, and/or quantitative information and translate findings into clear conclusions and actionable next steps.
  • Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills, including demonstrated ability to independently structure ambiguous problems, identify patterns, discrepancies, gaps, dependencies, and potential risk implications, and determine when additional investigation or escalation is warranted.
  • Experience working with large inventories, datasets, or structured information, including performing quality-control reviews, exception analysis, and maintaining appropriate documentation and traceability.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and workstreams while maintaining a high degree of accuracy, organization, and attention to detail.
  • Experience partnering effectively with Legal, Compliance, Risk, business, technology, and/or subject-matter experts to resolve issues, obtain decisions, and drive work to completion.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including demonstrated ability to translate complex information into clear, concise, and management-ready communications, analysis, and presentations.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel, including formulas, lookups, pivot tables, analysis, and proficiency with Microsoft PowerPoint.
  • Experience using or demonstrated ability to quickly learn GRC, regulatory change management, compliance, workflow, or other enterprise technology platforms.
  • Demonstrated experience using generative AI or other emerging technologies to enhance research, analysis, synthesis, classification, documentation, or process efficiency, with appropriate validation, source verification, confidentiality, and human oversight.
  • Ability to recognize regulatory, compliance, operational, or execution risks requiring escalation and clearly communicate the issue, potential impact, supporting evidence, and recommended path forward.
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Economics, Accounting, Risk Management, Legal Studies, Data/Analytics, or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 5 or more years of relevant experience within financial-services Compliance, Risk Management, Legal, Regulatory Affairs, or Governance.
  • Direct experience with regulatory change management within a large, complex financial institution.
  • Experience developing, maintaining, or governing an enterprise laws, rules, regulations, obligations, or regulatory requirements inventory.
  • Experience working with regulatory content providers, external regulatory intelligence sources, or third-party compliance vendors.
  • Experience mapping laws, rules, regulations, requirements, or obligations to risk taxonomies, business processes, controls, products, legal entities, or other enterprise risk-management structures.
  • Knowledge of U.S. banking and financial-services regulatory frameworks; experience with global regulatory frameworks is a plus.
  • Demonstrated experience identifying opportunities to improve or automate processes and implementing solutions that increase accuracy, efficiency, transparency, or scalability.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate effectively in an environment involving ambiguity, evolving requirements, multiple stakeholders, and competing priorities.
