The Accelerator Operations and Technology (AOT) Division is seeking a highly motivated Research and Development Engineer (R&D Engineer 2 or 3) to join the Mechanical Design and Engineering (MDE) Team at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE). LANSCE is one of the world's premier accelerator facilities, supporting national security, basic science, isotope production, and materials research through the operation of a high-power linear particle accelerator.
The MDE Team provides engineering design, analysis, operation, and maintenance support for a diverse range of accelerator systems, including industrial cooling water systems, vacuum systems, beam diagnostics, magnets, and specialized mechanical equipment that enable reliable accelerator operations.
We are seeking an engineer with expertise in industrial cooling water systems to support the design, operation, maintenance, and modernization of the accelerator cooling water systems that provide critical cooling to accelerator structures, magnets, beamline components, and experimental facilities throughout the LANSCE complex.
This position offers opportunities to work on challenging engineering problems that directly impact the performance and reliability of one of the nation's premier scientific user facilities.
  • Design, analyze, operate, troubleshoot, and improve industrial cooling water systems supporting accelerator operations.
  • Perform hydraulic, thermohydraulic, and thermal analyses to optimize system performance, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Design piping systems, cooling circuits, equipment layouts, and mechanical assemblies using CAD software.
  • Perform engineering calculations to select pumps, heat exchangers, valves, piping, instrumentation, and other system components.
  • Investigate equipment failures, perform root cause analyses, and develop long-term corrective actions that improve system reliability.
  • Support installation, commissioning, testing, operation, and maintenance of new and existing accelerator equipment.
  • Develop engineering drawings, specifications, calculations, procedures, and technical documentation.
  • Collaborate with scientists, engineers, technicians, maintenance personnel, and operations staff to develop practical engineering solutions.
  • Support structural, thermal, and mechanical engineering projects across the MDE organization as program priorities require.
  • Ensure engineering work complies with applicable engineering standards, safety requirements, and quality assurance practices.

R&D Engineer 3 $128,000 - $215,900
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level The successful candidate will possess a higher level of analytical knowledge and skill, advanced knowledge of water system components and selection, extensive knowledge of water de-ionization, and exceptional leadership skills.

Work Location : The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
