The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge that spans the Golden Gate strait, the one-mile-wide (1.6 km), three-mile-long (4.8 km) channel between San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. The bridge connects the city of San Francisco to Marin County, California. The Golden Gate Bridge was the longest suspension bridge span in the world when it was completed in 1937, and has become an internationally recognized symbol of San Francisco and California. The bridge has been declared one of the Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers. The bridge is owned and operated by the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District.
