Are you looking to turn your Peloton obsession into a career? Well, not everyone can be Cody Rigsby or Ally Love, two of Peloton’s famous instructors, but the gig sure does pay well.
Instructors at the connected fitness empire can earn big bucks, with salaries and incentives reaching upwards of $500,000, according to multiple reports.
For those unaware of what Peloton is, it’s similar to the pack of cyclists leading the charge at the Tour de France — but from the comfort of your home.
When the pandemic struck shuttered gyms in 2020, virtual fitness saw a boom. Peloton’s stationary bikes, which cost more than $2,000, became a craze as their digital memberships created a cycling studio from anywhere in your home.
Peloton’s popularity quickly rose and shipments were delayed for months. Its stock soared and its instructors have become personalities beyond the screen connected to their bikes.
How much do Peloton instructors make?
While there isn’t a clear answer to what the salaries of popular Peloton instructors are, there have been breadcrumbs scattered on the internet that suggest instructors are living pretty well (h/t: Good Housekeeping).
Jess Sims, a New York City-based instructor, said she earned “six figures with stock options” in an interview with The Wall Street Journal in 2019.
Things have changed quite a bit in two years. A report in January not only confirmed Sims’ salary claims but said instructors make upwards of half a million dollars in total compensation.
One instructor last year received a six-figure salary and bonus offer. More-senior instructors make upwards of $500,000 in total compensation, say people familiar with the company — not counting the money they can make from external sponsorships. [Peloton founder John Foley], a big believer in shared ownership, has also handed equity awards to people throughout the company’s ranks. Regulatory filings show current and former employees as of Sept. 30, 2020, held stock options with several billion dollars of unrealized gains.
One of its more senior instructors, Cody Rigsby, a former professional dancer who was one of the company’s first employees, recently purchased a Williamsburg penthouse for $1.46 million, according to the New York Post.
It’s unclear what Rigsby actually makes, but it doesn’t take a mathematician to understand that $1.46 million is a lot of money.
