Even if you don’t consider yourself ‘accomplished,’ there are plenty of things you may want to cross off your bucket or to-do list by the time you hit the ‘new 40.’
Start a legacy
Okay, you don’t have to become famous and leave behind something so grand that the world knows who you are, but what about a legacy for your loved ones? It could be anything.
Whether you start a movement, rally for something important to you, leave behind a family business, or just create crazy good family traditions.
Leave something behind for your family to carry on – something that they will always remember you by but will want to carry on.
Be a mentor
Think back, how many people have mentored you in your life? Lost count? Me too.
It’s time to return the favor. Be the mentor this time. It doesn’t have to be for the same reason/focus you were mentored – but make a difference in someone’s life. You remember how good it felt when someone mentored you – it’s time to pass that feeling onto someone else.
You choose how and where. It doesn’t have to be financial. It could be your time or your skills. Honestly, it could be anything.
So many people in our local community, country, and the world need us. What means the most to you? Where could you make the biggest difference?
Love being alone
We’re brought up to constantly be around people and to do for other people, but what about yourself? What do you love? What makes you smile? You may not even know.
Spend some time alone, thinking about it. Surround yourself with what you love. Whether it’s time in nature, in the car, or just sitting on your couch. Sit still, in the quiet, and let your body enjoy the silence.
Claim your expertise at something
Become an expert at anything. It doesn’t have to be what you make a living doing. It doesn’t have to be something that you’ve ever done before.
Just find anything that you absolutely love and learn everything you possibly can about it and share your passion with others.
Read over 100 books
If you love to read, you may have already reached this milestone. If not, start. You may find a new hobby that you love.
If nothing else, you’ll increase your expertise and maybe find something you can become an expert at.
Reading opens up a whole new world for you, whether it’s fiction or nonfiction. Start your list today.
Do something spontaneous
All your life, you’ve had people telling you what to do, right? It’s time to throw caution to the wind and do something completely unplanned and exciting.
It doesn’t have to be extravagant – do what you’re comfortable doing, but make it spur of the moment, and don’t let yourself be talked out of it.
Laugh a lot
Life is too serious. Laugh and love doing it. Kids laugh more than 300 times a day. How about you? If you can’t remember the last time you laughed, it’s time to start.
Watch funny cat videos, put on your favorite sitcom, or call a friend that you know will make you laugh.
As you near 50, it’s time to be who you want to be, not who anyone else wants you to be. Are you ready to throw caution to the wind, show the world your wild side, and have fun? Start today!
