6 things you need to stop doing now while working from home

You may have found that you’re working from home now due to the pandemic and just don’t have time for everything on your plate.

Continuing to balance a new work environment and other interruptions at home can be very difficult. Maximizing your time is more important now than ever, so It’s crucial that you find new ways to limit distractions and avoid burnout

Whether you enjoy working from home or find yourself unproductive, here are things you should stop doing now to free up your time and allow you to work more efficiently on what is important.

1. Social media

Consider uninstalling all social media apps from your phone or setting screen time limits within your phone’s settings.

You may only subconsciously be aware of how distracting the latest update or message notification can be. You’re probably also spending way too much time aimlessly scrolling through your social media feeds.

If you don’t want to go to that extreme, consider putting your phone in another room, out of sight, out of mind. Just make sure you don’t leave audible notifications turned on, or you’ll feel tempted to check them!

2. Checking your email

Unless you’re expecting an important email to come through today, don’t even bother opening your personal inbox. It’s not unusual for most people to receive dozens of unnecessary emails or promotional offerings each day. Additionally, it’s not necessary to check your work email every five minutes. 

The amount of time you spend opening and refreshing your inbox dramatically affects your productivity because you’ll need to get back into the flow of what you were working on beforehand.

3. Unnecessary meetings

Sometimes you’ll find that people constantly invite you to meetings that add zero value to your work and have no impact on your workflow. Don’t be afraid to politely say “no, thank you,” and explain how your time could be better spent without the distraction.

If your meeting notice isn’t clear on what the objectives for the meeting are, don’t hesitate to ask for an overview or agenda. You’d be surprised how many meetings can be boiled down to a straightforward email rather than 30 minutes of fluff. 

4. Using sticky notes

If you’re not using a productivity tool, you’re seriously wasting your own time. Stop using sticky notes and get set up with task management software like Trello or Asana. You can use it to manage all of your projects, both professionally and personally. It’s also a great way to collaborate with teams or your spouse. 

5. Staying in your pajamas

It may sound really comfy, but many work from home experts believe showering and having a ‘normal’ morning routine is essential despite where your office is. As difficult as this may be for some, having a routine can help you stay mentally fit for the day. 

Continuing to ‘get ready’ in the morning can also give you a sense of normality. Another trick that some have shared is that you should continue to wear shoes as if you were still going into the office.

6. Working from the couch

You must dedicate a space to your home office and stop working from the couch. If you don’t love your current home office, try a different workspace each day wherever you can make room until you find one that makes you the most productive. Whatever the case, it’s important to do what works best for you so that you can keep feeling refreshed and energized each day.

You can eliminate these six things right now as you work from home but also try to mix things up. Take note of the things you are doing that are slowing you down or making you less productive.

You can try to change them and adapt to your new environment the best you can during this time. My overall suggestion would be to do everything you can to protect your mental health and sanity during this time.
