4 lies recruiters constantly tell you all the time

Getting caught in a lie while on an interview could be really embarrassing and also make you look pretty unprofessional. Whether it’s lying about experience or flubbing skills to make yourself look more like a worthy candidate, a lot of applicants do it. A study from 2017 found that 85% of employers caught applicants lying on their resumes or applications, a steep increase from 66% in 2012.

But lying doesn’t end with the applicant — recruiters do it quite frequently, too.

The lying game

Clearance Jobs recently tallied 10 lies recruiters often tell applicants during an interview, which highlights several buzzy phrases and remarks often made during interviews that sound great at the time, but can ultimately mean nothing.

Here are a few worth highlighting.

We’ll be in touch

Ever have a great interview where you can start to see the finish line right before your eyes? You’ve hit it off with the recruiters, your resume matches well for what they want, and you’re eager to proceed. You ask when you can expect to hear about a decision (or further interviews) and you’re replied with the open-ended “we’ll be in touch.”

“This is a very nonchalant way for someone to tell you what you want to hear without any concrete timelines,” the report said.
Yikes.

You’re great on paper

So your resume looks great in the eyes of the beholder but when you think about what they are actually saying, it can mean something entirely different.

“What the hiring team really means is that you’re not the best candidate for the role or they just don’t really like you.”
Talk about a 180.

We’re interested but are interviewing other candidates

This is somewhat of a tease, like keeping someone on a string and not letting them get too far. If you’re a good fit, odds are a company will expedite the process and act on intuition. Here, it’s clear that they’re taking their time by allowing others to step in, ultimately leaving you in limbo.

“In the fast-paced staffing for defense contracts, they don’t have time to be wishy washy – they either think you’re a good fit, or not.”

There is nothing negative about this employer! Any negative reviews on online cannot be trusted.

Simply put: Everyone has a story.

“Take this one with a grain of salt. Some people are unnecessarily salty, but there may be some truth to the complaints from former employees,” the report said.
