Every data center we build needs water to run - and getting it there, and safely back out, is one of the most important challenges we solve. In this role, you'll deliver the water and wastewater infrastructure our data centers depend on, and you'll do it by finding win-win solutions that bring real benefit to the communities we're part of while balancing business and environmental needs.

This isn't a role where you sit behind a desk and wait for a connection. You'll be out in front, working shoulder-to-shoulder with local water and wastewater utilities and the communities they serve - long before a shovel hits the ground. You'll help utilities understand what we need and how we use water, so they can plan with confidence and speak to it openly with their own boards, councils, and neighbors. You'll size up whether a utility is ready to serve, spot the financial and community considerations early, and help shape the strategy and agreements that turn a promising site into a workable one.

- Figure out whether a utility can actually serve a project, and surface the financial, regulatory, and community risks early.

- Do the homework on candidate sites - what water is available, where it can go, and what it'll take - so we choose the right places to build.

- Shape the water supply and discharge strategy that guides everything downstream.

- Negotiate the agreements that secure water service, and get creative when the standard playbook doesn't fit.

Key job responsibilities

The Water Projects Engineer will be responsible for the following:

Infrastructure Delivery

- Support the planning, design, and execution of water and wastewater infrastructure projects that support water delivery to our facilities.

- Participate in design reviews, constructability and cost/schedule assessments, and coordination with engineering, real estate, and environmental health & safety teams.

- Coordinate with utilities on site requirements, inspections, and compliance with applicable federal, state, and municipal requirements and building codes.

Utility Readiness & Assessment

- Evaluate a utility's ability to serve a project, considering both financial factors (rate structures, capital capacity, and cost-recovery mechanisms) and community and regulatory factors (permitting, local sentiment, and stakeholder alignment).

- Identify and communicate potential gaps or risks early to inform planning and negotiation.

Due Diligence & Site Selection

- Conduct water and wastewater due diligence for candidate sites, evaluating available supply, discharge options, and infrastructure constraints to inform site selection decisions.

- Partner with real estate, power, and land development teams early in the site selection process to identify water-related opportunities and risks before a site is committed.

Water Strategy & Planning

- Contribute to the development of site-specific water supply and discharge strategies, translating demand and readiness findings into clear design requirements.

- Analyze water demand, usage, and resiliency data to inform planning decisions.

Water Service Agreement Negotiation

- Support and progressively lead the negotiation of water service agreements and related utility contracts and connection agreements for domestic, fire, cooling water supply, and wastewater service.

- Coordinate with legal, finance, and internal stakeholders to structure terms and develop alternative approaches where a standard agreement is not feasible.

Utility & Municipal Relationships

- Build and maintain early, collaborative relationships with local water and wastewater utilities and municipalities, serving as a consistent point of contact throughout the project lifecycle.

- Work with utilities to develop a clear, shared understanding of projected water demand, usage patterns, and how water is used within our facilities - supporting them in accurately representing the project in public meetings and community forums.

- Develop clear supporting materials that translate technical water requirements into information that utility and community stakeholders can act on.

General

- Collaborate across internal engineering, operations, real estate, environmental health & safety, and legal teams to advance water solutions, particularly in areas that lack adequate existing water and wastewater infrastructure.

- Support projects that advance water sustainability goals.

- Up to 20% travel as needed for utility engagement and project work where authorized.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

- Bachelor's degree in business, data science, public administration, finance, engineering, human resources, or related field

- 3+ years building and cultivating relationships with external stakeholders such as utilities, regulators, or public agencies

- 3+ years of experience working with water or wastewater utilities, municipalities, or related infrastructure projects

- Experience with financial analysis, modeling, or regulatory frameworks that underpin water or infrastructure projects, including projects with budgets of $10M+

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

- Experience supporting infrastructure projects across planning, design, and/or delivery

- Understanding of the permitting and regulatory requirements involved in delivering water and wastewater infrastructure, particularly in Ohio and/or Pennsylvania

- Experience assessing site or utility readiness, including financial and regulatory factors

- Experience with community engagement or public-facing communication

- Strong communication skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical audiences
