Job Overview

The Vice President, Government Affairs fosters strong relationships with key policymakers across both political parties, identifies and navigates risks and opportunities at the federal and state levels, and represents Macy's interests in critical external engagements. While this role is based in New York City, the position has a national scope with a concentration in New York City and Washington, D.C.

What You Will Do
  • Develop a comprehensive stakeholder map for Macy's and its assets, strategically identifying risks and opportunities to protect the brand and advance business objectives.
  • Identify Macy's-specific risks and opportunities within federal and state regulatory environments and design strategies to address them through cross-functional collaboration.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with policymakers in Washington, DC, New York State, and New York City, managing corporate policy priorities nationwide.
  • Represent Macy's in coalitions, public policy forums, and state / national retail trade associations, ensuring the company's positions are effectively communicated on issues such as retail, labor, tax, trade, data privacy, and consumer protection.
  • Organize and participate in public policy events, briefings, and community forums to amplify Macy's presence and support strategic initiatives.
  • Anticipate and assess changes in legislative, regulatory, policy, and political landscapes at the federal, state, and local levels, providing scenario planning and strategic recommendations to senior leadership and the Board.
  • Lead and develop a small team, shaping group priorities in collaboration with Macy's Head of Communications.
  • Partner closely with Legal, Tax, and External Communications teams to ensure alignment and effective execution of initiatives.
  • Represent Macy's at external events, policy forums, and other key public engagements.
  • Foster an environment of acceptance and respect that strengthens relationships, and ensures authentic connections with colleagues, customers, and communities.

Skills You Will Need

Government Relations & Policy Expertise - Deep understanding of federal, state, and local regulatory environments; ability to identify, assess, and navigate risks and opportunities to advance business objectives.

Strategic Stakeholder Management - Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with policymakers, trade associations, and other external partners to influence policy outcomes and protect brand interests.

Cross-Functional Collaboration - Skilled in partnering with Legal, Tax, Communications, and other internal teams to align strategies and execute initiatives effectively.

Leadership & Team Development - Ability to lead, mentor, and develop a small team while shaping priorities and driving accountability.

Executive Advisory & Communication - Strong capability to advise senior leaders on government relations, public affairs strategies, and regulatory impacts.

Analytical & Strategic Thinking - Skilled in assessing complex regulatory landscapes, designing strategic responses, and translating insights into actionable plans.

Political Savvy & Influence - Ability to navigate complex political environments, anticipate changes in policy, and influence outcomes through strategic relationships and advocacy.

Crisis Management & Risk Mitigation - Skill in managing high-stakes situations, responding to regulatory or political challenges, and minimizing reputational and operational risks.

Negotiation & Consensus-Building - Ability to negotiate effectively with policymakers, trade associations, and internal stakeholders, building consensus and achieving outcomes in complex, multi-party scenarios.

Communication & Messaging Expertise - Advanced ability to craft clear, persuasive messaging for diverse audiences, including senior leaders, policymakers, and the public, ensuring alignment with corporate strategy.

Who You Are
  • Candidates with a bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience in a related field are encouraged to apply.
  • 15+ years of experience in government affairs, public policy, or related fields, including leadership roles working with federal, state, and local policymakers and external stakeholders.
  • Regularly required to sit, talk, hear; use hands/fingers to touch, handle, and feel. Occasionally required to move about the workplace and reach with hands and arms. Requires close vision.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule based on department and company needs.
