Position Summary
The Controller is responsible for leading all accounting and financial reporting functions for a multi-location retail organization. This individual will oversee the monthly close process, financial reporting, inventory accounting, internal controls, cash management, and the development of accounting policies and procedures. The Controller will partner closely with operations and executive leadership to support growth initiatives, improve processes, and provide actionable financial insights.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Accounting & Financial Reporting
- Lead all aspects of the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes
- Prepare timely and accurate financial statements in accordance with U.S. GAAP
- Manage general ledger activities, account reconciliations, and journal entries
- Ensure compliance with accounting policies and internal controls
- Coordinate annual audits and serve as the primary liaison with external auditors
- Maintain accounting procedures and documentation
Retail Operations Support
- Oversee accounting for a multi-location retail operation
- Manage inventory accounting, shrink analysis, and inventory reserves
- Monitor gross margin performance and analyze variances
- Review store-level financial performance and key operating metrics
- Partner with operations leaders to improve profitability and efficiency
Cash Management and Treasury
- Oversee cash flow management and liquidity planning
- Monitor daily cash activity and banking relationships
- Manage debt compliance and reporting requirements, if applicable
Leadership
- Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team
- Foster a collaborative and high-performance culture
- Evaluate staffing needs and implement process improvements
- Establish goals and performance expectations for team members
Process Improvement
- Identify opportunities to streamline accounting processes and enhance controls
- Implement best practices and leverage technology to improve efficiency
- Participate in ERP implementations and system enhancements
- Support acquisitions, integrations, and other strategic initiatives as needed
Qualification
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required
- CPA designation strongly preferred
- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership responsibilities
- Experience within a multi-location retail environment strongly preferred
- Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and financial reporting
- Experience with inventory accounting and cost accounting
- Experience managing external audits and internal controls
- Proficiency with ERP systems and advanced Excel skills
- Ability to communicate effectively with executive leadership and operational teams
