Full Job Description
For this position, we are seeking a highly technical and strategic accounting leader to fill a key role within the Accounting department of a publicly traded West Coast office REIT. This position will have significant visibility with executive management and will serve as the Company's primary technical accounting and policy expert. The position reports to the Chief Accounting Officer and will partner closely with Finance, Investments, Construction and Development, Legal, and executive leadership on complex business transactions and accounting policy matters. Opportunity Requirements • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field • Active CPA license. • 12+ years of progressive accounting experience in Big Four and/or industry. • Strong technical knowledge of U.S. GAAP and SEC reporting standards, including real estate accounting, lease accounting (lessor focus preferred), acquisitions, impairments, consolidations, variable interest entities, and debt and equity transactions. • Extensive experience researching complex business transactions and preparing technical accounting memoranda and documenting accounting conclusions for complex transactions. • Strong background evaluating accounting and disclosure implications for complex business transactions for public company reporting • Ability to communicate complex accounting concepts clearly and effectively to senior management and business partners. • Strong leadership, project management, and organizational skills. • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a dynamic environment. • Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving skills with attention to detail. • Following qualifications considered a plus: • Public REIT or real estate industry experience. • Experience supporting acquisitions, dispositions, joint ventures, and financing transactions. • Experience implementing new accounting and reporting standards. Position Summary The Vice President, Technical Accounting & Policies is responsible for leading the Company's technical accounting and accounting policy functions. This role serves as the primary advisor on U.S. GAAP matters and is responsible for evaluating, documenting, and communicating accounting conclusions related to significant and non-routine business transactions. The Vice President partners closely with various business functions to assess the accounting implications of strategic initiatives, ensure consistent application of accounting policies, and monitor emerging accounting developments affecting the Company. This role serves as a trusted advisor to executive management and helps ensure the Company maintains best-in-class accounting practices and governance. Summary of Responsibilities The core responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to the following: Technical Accounting Leadership • Serve as the Company's primary technical accounting resource for complex and non-routine transactions. • Research, analyze, and document accounting conclusions under U.S. GAAP. • Prepare and review technical accounting memoranda supporting significant transactions. • Provide accounting guidance to executive management and cross-functional stakeholders. • Coordinate consultations with external accounting advisors and independent auditors on technical matters. Real Estate, Leasing, Investment & Capital Markets Transactions Lead accounting analyses related to: • Leasing transactions • Acquisitions and dispositions • Joint ventures and partnership arrangements • Variable Interest Entity (VIE) evaluations • Development and construction activities • Impairment assessments • Held-for-sale transactions • Debt and equity capital transactions • Support transaction structuring discussions and evaluate accounting implications of proposed transactions. Accounting Policy & Governance • Own and maintain the Company's accounting policy framework. • Draft, update, and communicate accounting policies and technical guidance. • Ensure consistent application of accounting policies across the organization. • Develop educational materials and provide technical accounting training to finance and accounting personnel. • Promote best practices and accounting governance throughout the organization. Accounting Standards Implementation • Monitor FASB and SEC developments affecting the Company. • Assess impacts of new accounting standards and emerging guidance. • Lead implementation projects related to new accounting pronouncements. • Coordinate implementation efforts across departments and communicate impacts to management. Leadership & Process Improvement • Establish best practices for accounting research and documentation. • Drive continuous improvement initiatives, including automation and process efficiencies. • Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, and technical excellence. What we offer At Kilroy, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within the role. The base pay range for this role is between $230,000 and $275,000 and your base pay will depend on your skills, experience and training, knowledge, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. This role is eligible for an annual discretionary bonus as well.
