Position Overview

The Vice President of Wellness provides executive leadership for Compass Senior Living's clinical and wellness strategy across all communities. This role is responsible for developing and maintaining a culture of clinical excellence while ensuring exceptional resident care, regulatory compliance, operational consistency, and quality outcomes throughout the organization.

As a key member of the executive leadership team, the Vice President of Wellness partners closely with Sr. VP of Operations, VP of Human Resources, VP of Sales & Marketing, and other corporate leaders to establish clinical standards, develop innovative wellness programs, and support community success. This leader serves as the organization's clinical authority, providing guidance, mentorship, and strategic direction to Regional Wellness Directors, community Wellness Directors and community leadership teams while fostering environments where residents thrive and team members feel supported.

Essential Job Functions

Executive Leadership
  • Develop and execute Compass Senior Living's clinical and wellness strategy in alignment with the company's mission and strategic objectives.
  • Provide executive oversight of wellness services across all assisted living and memory care communities.
  • Serve as the clinical advisor to the Executive Leadership Team on matters related to resident care, quality, compliance, and clinical operations.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, accountability, innovation, and resident-centered care.

Clinical Operations
  • Establish and maintain company-wide clinical standards, policies, procedures, and best practices.
  • Ensure consistent delivery of high-quality resident care across all communities.
  • Provide guidance and consultation on complex resident care matters.
  • Support resident assessments and clinical decision-making when appropriate.
  • Promote evidence-based practices that enhance resident health, safety, and quality of life.
  • Develop and lead an enterprise-wide wellness strategy that addresses the physical, emotional, cognitive, social, spiritual, and functional well-being of residents and promotes purpose, independence, engagement, and quality of life.
  • Partner closely with Life Enrichment and Operations to create an integrated resident experience that connects wellness, meaningful engagement, cognitive stimulation, social connection, physical activity, and purpose.
  • Provide strategic oversight to ensure Timeless Connections becomes an integral part of Compass's whole-person wellness approach, particularly within Memory Care. The role should support consistent implementation, measure resident and team outcomes, and identify opportunities to continually enhance the program.
  • Identify, evaluate, and implement innovative wellness technologies, programs, and partnerships that improve resident safety, engagement, outcomes, and quality of life. Establish a process for piloting, measuring, and scaling successful innovations across the portfolio.
  • Incorporate resident, family and team member feedback into wellness strategy and program development. Ensure wellness initiatives are responsive to individual preferences, goals, interests, and changing needs.
  • Establish and monitor a wellness scorecard that measures key outcomes, trends, and opportunities for improvement. Use data to identify opportunities, drive accountability, and demonstrate measurable results.
  • Evaluate the financial impact and ROI of wellness programs, technology, staffing models, and clinical initiatives. Partner with Operations and Finance to ensure investments improve resident outcomes while supporting operational efficiency and financial performance.
  • Develop relationships with healthcare providers, hospitals, therapy providers, home health, hospice, pharmacy, technology partners, and other organizations that can enhance resident health and wellness outcomes.
  • Lead a culture of innovation and continuous improvement, ensuring Compass remains at the forefront of whole-person wellness, aging services, technology, and resident experience.

Regulatory Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations governing assisted living and memory care.
  • Monitor regulatory changes and implement organizational processes to maintain compliance.
  • Lead preparation for regulatory surveys and licensing inspections.
  • Oversee corrective action plans and monitor sustained compliance following surveys or investigations.

Quality Assurance & Risk Management
  • Lead the organization's Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) initiatives.
  • Monitor and analyze key clinical metrics, including:
    • Falls
    • Medication management
    • Resident incidents
    • Hospitalizations
    • Infection prevention and control
    • Weight management
    • Quality indicators
  • Identify trends and implement proactive improvement strategies.
  • Partner with Operations to reduce clinical risk while enhancing resident outcomes.

Leadership & Team Development
  • Recruit, mentor, coach, and develop Wellness Directors and other clinical leaders.
  • Build leadership capability through education, coaching, and succession planning.
  • Conduct clinical leadership meetings and ongoing professional development.
  • Promote collaboration between community teams and corporate departments.

Operational Partnership
  • Partner with Regional Directors of Operations to achieve operational and clinical excellence.
  • Participate in community visits, operational reviews, and performance assessments.
  • Collaborate with Sales and Marketing regarding resident assessments and clinical occupancy opportunities.
  • Support new community openings, acquisitions, transitions, and operational integrations.

Education & Clinical Support
  • Develop organization-wide clinical education programs and competency standards.
  • Ensure communities maintain appropriate clinical training and ongoing education.
  • Provide consultation during emergencies and complex clinical situations.

Financial Stewardship
  • Partner with Operations to effectively manage wellness labor, staffing models, and clinical resources.
  • Assist with budget development and responsible resource utilization.
  • Evaluate opportunities to improve efficiency while maintaining exceptional resident care.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Education & Licensure
  • Registered Nurse (RN) preferred.
  • Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) required at minimum, with an active, unrestricted license in good standing.
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing, Healthcare Administration, or a related healthcare field preferred.
  • Master's degree is desired.

Experience
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of progressive clinical leadership experience within senior living.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of multi-site leadership experience overseeing assisted living and/or memory care operations.
  • Senior living industry experience is required.
  • Demonstrated success leading clinical operations across multiple communities.
  • Strong knowledge of assisted living and memory care regulations, survey processes, resident care standards, and clinical risk management.
  • Experience leading quality improvement initiatives, policy development, and regulatory compliance programs.

Physical Requirments

Medium Work - Ability to exert 20-50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10-25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. The ability to travel extensively, work in community environments, communicate effectively, and respond to urgent operational or clinical situations as needed.

Travel

Frequent travel to communities is required. Travel is expected to support community operations, leadership development, quality assurance activities, regulatory readiness, acquisitions, and organizational initiatives.
