VP, HR Business Partner - HG04AE

The Hartford is seeking a Vice President, Lead HR Business Partner (HRBP) to serve as a strategic advisor to the leaders of our Middle & Large Commercial businesses. Reporting directly to the Chief Human Resources Officer, this highly visible role will shape and execute people strategies that accelerate business performance, organizational effectiveness, workforce transformation, and leadership excellence.

The ideal candidate will be based in Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, or Massachusetts and maintain a strong in-office presence in Hartford, CT. This is a hybrid role requiring three days per week in the office (Tuesday-Thursday).

Responsibilities:
  • Partner with senior business leaders to develop and execute human capital strategies that drive business growth, organizational effectiveness, and enterprise objectives.
  • Develop a deep understanding of Middle & Large Commercial's 14 business units, strategies, operating models, and talent needs, while building strong partnerships across Enterprise Business Segments, Distribution, and key enterprise stakeholders to drive business outcomes.
  • Accelerate leadership capability and succession readiness by partnering closely with Learning and Talent leaders to develop critical talent, strengthen leadership pipelines, and build future-ready capabilities across the organization.
  • Lead strategic workforce planning efforts to ensure the organization has the talent, skills, and organizational structure required to meet current and future business needs.
  • Foster a high-performing culture through a focus on employee engagement, team effectiveness, accountability, and leadership excellence.
  • Leverage people analytics, workforce insights, and external market trends to proactively inform business decisions and talent strategies.
  • Lead and develop an HRBP team while leveraging deep partnerships across HR Centers of Excellence, including Learning, Talent, Total Rewards, Employee Relations, and Culture, to deliver integrated solutions that advance business priorities.
  • Partner with COEs to execute enterprise talent strategies and people processes, including leadership and capability development, talent management, organizational design, performance management, compensation, and strategic workforce planning.
  • Advise leaders through significant organizational and workforce changes, including business transformation, technology adoption, and evolving workforce models.
  • Champion and accelerate culture priorities that strengthen business performance and employee experience.


Qualifications:
  • 15+ years of progressive Human Resources leadership experience, including significant HR Business Partner experience within a large, complex organization.
  • Demonstrated success advising senior executives and leading workforce transformation initiatives at scale.
  • Demonstrated ability to rapidly learn complex businesses and build credibility across multiple business units, functions, and stakeholder groups.
  • Strong understanding of emerging workforce trends, including AI, technology-enabled work, automation, and organizational transformation.
  • Proven ability to use data, analytics, and business insights to influence strategic decisions and measure outcomes.
  • Exceptional executive presence with the ability to coach, influence, challenge, and partner effectively with senior leaders.
  • Experience leading and developing high-performing HR teams in matrixed environments.
  • Strong business acumen and the ability to build credibility in a results-oriented, relationship-driven culture.
  • Outstanding communication skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas clearly and influence diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated change leadership capabilities, including navigating ambiguity and guiding organizations through significant transformation.
  • Intellectual curiosity, learning agility, and a continuous improvement mindset.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Willingness to travel domestically as needed, approximately 20% during the first 3-6 months and 10-20% thereafter.


Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$224,000 - $336,000
