Job DescriptionSpear D Construction is seeking an experienced
UtilitySuperintendent. This position is responsible for managing daily jobsite activities, coordinating crews, equipment, materials, subcontractors, and inspections, and ensuring utility projects are completed safely, efficiently, on schedule, and according to plans and specifications. The Utility Superintendent will work closely with Project Managers, foremen, field crews, inspectors, subcontractors, suppliers, and clients to maintain productivity, quality, and clear communication throughout each project. The ideal candidate has strong underground utility construction experience, understands field production, and can effectively lead crews while identifying and resolving issues before they impact the project.
Job Responsibilities- Oversee daily field operations for underground utility and heavy civil construction projects.
- Supervise installation of water, sewer, storm drain, and other underground utility systems.
- Coordinate crews, subcontractors, equipment, materials, and suppliers to ensure work is ready before each phase begins.
- Review project plans, specifications, scopes of work, and schedules to understand project requirements.
- Plan daily and weekly field activities to maintain production and meet project schedules.
- Coordinate excavation, trenching, shoring, bedding, pipe installation, backfill, compaction, testing, and restoration activities.
- Ensure utility elevations, grades, alignments, and installations meet project plans and specifications.
- Work closely with Project Managers to communicate project progress, production, manpower needs, delays, and field conditions.
- Track labor, equipment usage, materials, production quantities, and overall job progress.
- Identify potential project delays, conflicts, or safety concerns and take appropriate action to resolve them.
- Coordinate utility locates and ensure existing underground facilities are identified and protected.
- Coordinate required inspections, testing, and approvals with inspectors, engineers, municipalities, and other agencies.
- Ensure crews have the proper tools, equipment, materials, and information needed to perform work efficiently.
- Monitor subcontractor performance and coordinate subcontracted work with project schedules.
- Maintain strong communication between field crews, Project Managers, inspectors, and project stakeholders.
- Participate in project planning, preconstruction meetings, progress meetings, and field coordination meetings.
- Verify materials delivered to the jobsite meet project specifications and are properly stored and protected.
- Review daily reports, timecards, production reports, and other field documentation for accuracy.
- Assist with identifying and documenting changed conditions, extra work, delays, and potential change orders.
- Ensure work is completed according to company quality standards and contract requirements.
- Maintain clean, organized, and professional jobsites.
- Enforce company safety policies, OSHA requirements, and job-specific safety procedures.
- Conduct or participate in daily safety meetings, pre-task planning, and job hazard assessments.
- Ensure proper trench safety, excavation protection, traffic control, and equipment operation practices are followed.
- Mentor and develop foremen and field employees to improve leadership, productivity, and technical skills.
- Hold crews accountable for safety, quality, productivity, attendance, and jobsite expectations.
- Coordinate project punch-list items and assist with project closeout.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications- 5+ years of underground utility or heavy civil construction experience.
- Previous experience as a Utility Superintendent, General Superintendent, Foreman, or similar field leadership role preferred.
- Strong experience with water, sewer, storm drain, and underground utility installation.
- Knowledge of excavation, trenching, shoring, pipe installation, backfill, compaction, grading, and site restoration.
- Strong understanding of construction plans, specifications, elevations, grades, and utility layouts.
- Experience coordinating crews, subcontractors, equipment, materials, inspectors, and suppliers.
- Ability to manage multiple crews and work activities while maintaining project schedules.
- Strong understanding of field production, manpower planning, and equipment utilization.
- Knowledge of OSHA construction standards and excavation/trench safety requirements.
- Competent Person training for excavation and trenching preferred.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification preferred.
- Experience working on municipal, public works, roadway, or publicly funded utility projects preferred.
- Ability to identify field problems and make timely decisions to keep projects moving.
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and project documents.
- Basic computer skills and ability to complete electronic reports, emails, and project documentation.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and around active construction equipment.
- Ability to travel to jobsites and work extended hours when required by project schedules.
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
- CDL or additional construction certifications are a plus.
