Underwriter - Environmental Site and Contractor Pollution The OpportunityAt AXIS, we believe that we can achieve more together. As we continue to expand our Environmental business, we are seeking an Underwriter / Senior Underwriter to join our Environmental Casualty team.
This role will be responsible for developing, underwriting, and managing a portfolio of monoline Site and contracts pollution with a focus on
Premises Pollution Liability (PPL) and
Contractors Pollution Liability (CPL) products. The position combines disciplined underwriting execution with business development responsibilities and provides an opportunity to work within one of the industry's leading specialty environmental platforms.
Key Responsibilities- Underwrite new and renewal environmental casualty business, including:
- Premises Pollution Liability (PPL)
- Contractors Pollution Liability (CPL)
- Evaluate complex environmental exposures, liabilities, and risk characteristics across a broad range of industries.
- Determine appropriate pricing, terms, conditions, deductibles, and coverage structures in accordance with AXIS underwriting guidelines.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with retail brokerage partners to drive profitable growth.
- Negotiate coverage, pricing, and policy terms while balancing production goals and portfolio profitability.
- Manage an individual book of business, including retention, rate adequacy, portfolio monitoring, and new business development.
- Collaborate with claims, legal, actuarial, risk engineering, and product development teams to deliver innovative environmental insurance solutions.
- Monitor market trends, industry developments, competitor activity, and emerging environmental exposures.
- Participate in broker meetings, industry events, and marketing initiatives to strengthen AXIS's market position.
- Maintain accurate underwriting documentation and ensure compliance with internal underwriting authority and regulatory requirements.
Product FocusThe successful candidate will primarily support AXIS's Environmental business, which provides specialized coverage solutions for pollution and environmental liabilities, including:
- Premises Pollution Liability (PPL)
- Contractors Pollution Liability (CPL)
- Site Pollution Liability
- Excess Environmental Liability
Qualifications- Minimum 2+ years of commercial insurance underwriting experience.
- Prior environmental, environmental, Site and Contractors pollution liability underwriting experience strongly preferred.
- Understanding of environmental exposures, pollution liabilities, and coverage concepts.
- Strong analytical and risk assessment capabilities.
- Demonstrated negotiation and relationship management skills.
- Ability to independently manage accounts and broker relationships.
- Strong communication, presentation, and organizational skills.
- Bachelor's degree preferred or equivalent insurance experience.
- Progress toward CPCU, ARM, CRIS, or other industry designations is a plus.

What we offer For this position, we currently expect to offer a base salary in the range of $75,000 to $150,000. Your salary offer will be based on an assessment of a variety of factors including your specific experience and work location.
