Underground Mine Manager

Location: Vancouver, BC, Canada
Employment Type: Regular Full Time
Workplace Type: Hybrid

Role Overview

We are seeking a highly experienced and results-driven Underground Mine Manager to lead the Exploration Phase of the Mine Life Extension (MLE) Project at Red Dog, Alaska. The successful candidate will be responsible for the delivery of twin declines for Teck American at the South Portal, located approximately 10km from the Red Dog Mine. This is a senior project management role, accountable for the end-to-end delivery of the underground scope, from initial planning and mobilization through to final execution and contract close out.

The Underground Mine Manager will be the single point of accountability for the safe, on-time, and on-budget delivery of the boxcut, twin declines and associated infrastructure. This role will manage all contractor performance and project controls related to the decline and box cut development. The successful candidate will work closely with the Studies team to support constructability reviews and obtain required sign-offs, and lead the Operations Readiness (OR) function to ensure a seamless and successful transition from exploration to a fully operational mine.

The position will be based in either the Vancouver or Anchorage office. Travel to the project site will be required for up to 50 percent of the time, subject to project requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures.
  • Lead the development of the underground works scope, technical specifications, and tender packages.
  • Participate with the Studies and Engineering teams in value engineering workshops, trade-off studies, and formal design reviews.
  • Provide expert constructability and execution feedback to rationalize designs for safety, efficiency, cost, and schedule.
  • Oversee the entire contractor mobilization process, including personnel, equipment, site establishment, regulatory, and permitting, ensuring all prerequisites are met prior to development beginning.
  • Work closely with the existing Red Dog Mine operation to ensure that clear roles and responsibilities for the Mine Life Extension (MLE) program exist amongst key stakeholders. With specific focus on logistics, camp space management and other shared resources.
  • Direct and manage all underground construction and development activities, holding the contractor accountable for performance.
  • Implement and maintain rigorous project controls for scope, schedule, cost, and quality.
  • Champion a zero-harm safety culture, ensuring all work complies with Teck and regulatory safety standards. Where local or Teck standards are not available, the standards of the contractor will be followed.
  • Proactively identify, manage, and mitigate project risks (safety, environmental, community, schedule, and cost).
  • Provide strong, visible leadership to the project team and contractor partners, fostering a culture of accountability and high performance.
  • Prepare and deliver progress reports, forecasts, and strategic recommendations to senior management and project stakeholders.
  • Act as the primary contact/partner for the Operations Readiness.
  • Oversee the commissioning of all underground infrastructure and systems in coordination with the OR and Commissioning teams.
  • Ensure the timely and accurate handover of all final as built project drawings and required project data (including master data for equipment)

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • A minimum of 15 years of experience in underground hard-rock mining, with at least 10 years in a senior management role (Manager, Superintendent, or equivalent).
  • Proven, hands-on experience managing large-scale underground capital projects, specifically decline or shaft development.
  • Senior leadership experience at an underground, operational mine site(s).
  • Demonstrated end-to-end contract management experience, from tender development and negotiation to managing contractor performance and claims.
  • Strong understanding of underground mining methods, ground support, and mine services (ventilation, power, dewatering).
  • Strong leadership and communication skills with the ability to manage multi-disciplinary teams and influence senior stakeholders.

About Teck Resources Limited

The Red Dog mine is a large zinc and lead mine in a remote region of Alaska, about 80 miles north of Kotzebue, which is owned and operated by the Canadian mining company Teck Resources. It is located within the boundaries of the Red Dog Mine census-designated place in the Northwest Arctic Borough of the U.S. state of Alaska. The mine is the world's largest producer of zinc and has the world's largest zinc reserves. Red Dog accounts for 10% of the world's zinc production. Red Dog accounted for 55% of the mineral value produced in Alaska in 2008. In 2008 the mine produced 515,200 metric tons of zinc, 122,600 metric tons of lead, and 283 metric tons of silver, for a total metal value of over one billion dollars. At the end of 2008 the mine had reserves of 61,400,000 metric tons of zinc at a grade of 17.1% and 61,400,000 tonnes of lead at a grade of 4.5%, as well as significant additional zinc and lead in the less well-measured resource category. According to a 2007 EPA report, the mine, which produces from an open pit, was mining the Aqqaluk ore body, immediately adjacent to the previous pit. Aqqaluk contains an additional 56 million metric tons of lead and zinc ore. The expansion was expected to keep the mine operating until 2031.:?16
