Full Job Description
The Travel Team Medical Director serves as the physician leader for the organization's Travel Team, overseeing physicians and Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) who provide clinical coverage at hospitals and healthcare facilities experiencing staffing shortages, leadership vacancies, volume surges, program transitions, or other operational challenges. This role ensures the delivery of safe, high-quality, patient-centered care while supporting the professional development, engagement, and performance of Travel Team clinicians. The Travel Team Medical Director works closely with site leadership, operational leaders, and clinical teams to maintain service excellence and operational stability across multiple facilities. The position combines clinical leadership, personnel management, quality oversight, recruitment support, and direct clinical practice. Essential Duties: Clinical Leadership: 2 - 4 hours per month • Provide clinical leadership and oversight for Travel Team physicians and APPs deployed throughout the organization. • Promote evidence-based medicine and adherence to organizational clinical standards. • Ensure consistent delivery of high-quality patient care across all assigned facilities. • Monitor and address clinical performance issues in collaboration with site and corporate leadership. • Support implementation of best practices, protocols, and quality initiatives across deployed sites. • Serve as a clinical resource for Travel Team members and local medical staff. Physician and APP Supervision: Variable • Directly supervise Travel Team physicians and APPs. • Address clinician concerns, professionalism issues, and conflict resolution matters. • Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, engagement, and continuous improvement. • Promote clinician wellness and retention initiatives. Quality and Performance Management: 1-2 hours per week • Conduct chart reviews, case reviews, and quality assessments as needed. • Partner with Quality and Operations leadership to identify opportunities for clinical improvement. • Assist with corrective action plans and performance improvement initiatives when necessary. • Ensure compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and organizational standards. Operational Support: 1-2 hours per week • Collaborate with Operations leadership to identify coverage needs and deployment priorities. • Assist in matching clinicians to sites based on skillset, experience, and organizational needs. • Participate in operational reviews and strategic planning discussions involving Travel Team resources. • Provide recommendations to improve efficiency, clinician utilization, and patient care delivery. • Support contract implementation, new program launches, and organizational growth initiatives. Recruitment and Retention: Up to 5 hours per week • Participate in recruiting, interviewing, and selecting Travel Team physicians and APPs. • Support onboarding and integration of newly hired clinicians. • Assist in developing career pathways and leadership opportunities within the Travel Team. • Promote a positive culture that supports retention and engagement. Hospital and Client Relations: Variable • Serve as Travel Team organizational ambassador at assigned facilities. • Assist in addressing client concerns and ensuring service excellence. Clinical Practice: Minimum 7 shifts per month or more as desired (at travel team rate) • Maintain active clinical privileges and provide direct patient care as assigned. • Serve scheduled clinical shifts at designated system and program locations. • Demonstrate clinical excellence and professionalism consistent with organizational expectations. Requirements Skills, Knowledge, Abilities: • Strong leadership and coaching abilities. • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. • Demonstrated ability to work effectively across multiple facilities and teams. • Strong understanding of healthcare quality, patient safety, and performance improvement. • Ability to analyze operational and clinical performance data. • Effective conflict resolution and problem-solving skills. • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. • Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment. • Occasional travel in an administrative role as required to facilities throughout the organization. • Willingness to travel for clinical shifts monthly to programs with greatest need • Exhibit growth mindset and team-orientated behaviors Education: • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO). • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Hospital Medicine, or specialty appropriate to Travel Team services. • Current unrestricted medical license in applicable states or ability to obtain licensure. • Current DEA registration and other required credentials. Experience: • Minimum five (5) years of clinical practice experience. • Prior Medical Director, Associate Medical Director, Lead Physician, or comparable leadership experience preferred. • Experience managing physicians and/or APPs strongly preferred. • Demonstrated success in quality improvement, operations, and team leadership.
