Transmission Analyst, Houston, TX Position Overview: Reporting to the Head of Commercial Operations, the Transmission Analyst will support the commercial optimization of the company's generation and energy portfolio through transmission analysis, congestion forecasting, market intelligence, and transmission strategy development. This role works closely with Commercial Operations team to evaluate transmission system impacts on asset value, identify market opportunities and risks, and support strategic decision-making across power markets.
The successful candidate will leverage production cost models, power flow analysis, market data, and transmission planning information to provide actionable insights regarding congestion, basis differentials, transmission constraints, interconnection activity, and emerging market trends.
Role and Key Responsibilities: Market Analysis and Commercial Optimization - Analyze transmission system conditions, congestion patterns, and market fundamentals affecting the company's generation and commercial positions.
- Develop forecasts for nodal and zonal congestion, locational marginal prices (LMPs), and basis differentials.
- Partner with Commercial Operations team to identify opportunities that enhance generation fleet profitability
- Monitor transmission outages, planned system upgrades, interconnection activity, and transmission expansion projects to assess impacts on portfolio value.
- Evaluate transmission-related opportunities and risks associated with current and future market conditions.
- Support short-term, seasonal, and long-term market forecasting.
- Prepare presentations and recommendations for management regarding emerging transmission and market issues.
- Support budgeting and valuation, and decisions through transmission and market analysis.
Modeling & Forecasting - Develop, maintain, and improve production cost, power flow, and market simulation models.
- Perform transmission studies using production cost modeling and power flow tools to analyze congestion and market outcomes.
- Maintain model inputs, databases, and assumptions to ensure accurate forecasting and analysis.
- Develop analytical tools and reporting solutions to improve decision-making capabilities.
- Interconnection & Transmission Planning Support
- Review generator interconnection requests, transmission studies, and regional planning processes.
- Assess potential impacts of transmission projects and planned system upgrades on existing and prospective assets.
- Monitor ISO/RTO stakeholder activities and regulatory developments affecting transmission and market operations.
Professional Requirements: - Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Economics, Mathematics, Data Science, Finance, or related field.
- 5-8 years of experience in wholesale power markets, transmission planning, market analytics, utility operations, or energy trading support.
- Knowledge of organized electricity markets, transmission systems, and locational marginal pricing.
- Experience with power system modeling, transmission analysis, or market forecasting.
- Strong analytical and quantitative skills.
- Experience in PJM, ISONE, and NYISO preferred.
