Job Title: Trader

Reports to (title): Senior Vice President, Head of Equity Trading

Job Description:

Alger seeks a highly motivated, experienced, and collaborative individual to serve as a Trader. The Trader will be responsible for executing equity trades across Alger portfolios while partnering closely with Portfolio Managers to implement investment decisions efficiently and effectively. The Trader will provide market intelligence, monitor trading activity and liquidity conditions, and contribute to best execution efforts across the firm. The individual will work closely with Portfolio Management, Research, Compliance, Operations, and Technology teams to support portfolio implementation, manage trading-related risks, and enhance trading processes. The Trader will also assist in maintaining broker relationships, evaluating execution quality, and supporting strategic initiatives that contribute to the continued development of Alger's trading platform.

Duties & Responsibilities:
• Execute equity trades across Alger portfolios in accordance with portfolio objectives, investment guidelines, and best execution principles.
• Serve as a key partner to Portfolio Managers, providing expertise on trade implementation, liquidity considerations, market conditions, and execution strategy.
• Develop and implement trading strategies designed to minimize market impact, manage transaction costs, and optimize execution outcomes.
• Monitor intraday market activity, order flow, liquidity conditions, news, corporate actions, and other market events that may impact portfolio holdings or trading decisions.
• Provide real-time market intelligence and actionable insights to Portfolio Managers and investment teams regarding market sentiment, trading dynamics, sector activity, and liquidity trends.
• Support portfolio rebalancing, cash management, fund flows, index changes, corporate actions, and other portfolio implementation activities.
• Build and maintain relationships with broker-dealers, electronic trading venues, and other market participants to enhance execution capabilities and access to market intelligence.
• Evaluate broker performance and contribute to broker review processes, execution analysis, and commission management initiatives.
• Review execution quality and transaction cost data to identify opportunities for continuous improvement in trading outcomes and workflows.
• Monitor portfolio exposures, cash balances, trading activity, and implementation risks to ensure efficient execution of investment decisions.
• Partner closely with Operations, Compliance, Risk, and Technology teams to ensure timely trade processing, issue resolution, and adherence to regulatory and firm requirements.
• Ensure all trading activities comply with internal policies, investment guidelines, and applicable regulatory requirements.
• Assist in the enhancement of trading workflows, systems, automation, and trading infrastructure to improve efficiency and scalability.
• Contribute to investment discussions and provide market observations that support portfolio construction and decision-making processes.
• Mentor and provide guidance to Junior Traders and other members of the investment team.
• Support special projects, strategic initiatives, and ad hoc analyses as requested by Portfolio Managers, the Head Trader, or senior leadership.

Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Business, Accounting, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above in a 4.0 scale is required
• 7+ years of institutional equity trading experience, preferably within an asset management, hedge fund, or other buy-side environment.
• Exceptionally detail-oriented and highly organized
• Demonstrated experience executing trades across a broad range of market capitalizations, sectors, and liquidity profiles.
• Strong understanding of equity market structure, trading venues, execution methodologies, transaction cost analysis, and best execution practices.
• Experience working directly with Portfolio Managers and investment teams in a fast-paced investment environment.
• Understanding of portfolio management concepts, investment processes, risk management principles, and trade lifecycle management.
• Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and make sound decisions under pressure in dynamic market conditions.
• Experience developing and maintaining relationships with brokers and other market participants.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate market insights and trading recommendations.
• Demonstrated attention to detail, accuracy, and sound judgment.
• CFA designation or progress toward the CFA designation is a plus.

Skills:
• Proficiency with Bloomberg, Charles River, FactSet, and electronic trading platforms.
• Advanced knowledge of equity trading strategies, market microstructure, liquidity management, and execution analytics.
• Strong analytical, quantitative, and problem-solving capabilities.
• Ability to evaluate trading opportunities, execution quality, and transaction costs using data-driven analysis.
• Strong understanding of portfolio implementation, risk management, and investment operations.
• Ability to interpret market data, company developments, and economic information relevant to portfolio holdings and trading activity.
• Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple orders, priorities, and deadlines simultaneously.
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build effective relationships with Portfolio Managers, Research Analysts, brokers, Operations, Compliance, Risk, and Technology teams.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment when handling sensitive investment information.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
• Experience utilizing trading and portfolio management systems to support efficient execution and reporting processes.
• Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, team-oriented environment while demonstrating a high degree of ownership and accountability.
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced market environment and adapt quickly to changing conditions.
• Excellent team-building skills to motivate, develop, and collaborate effectively with others.

Salary Expectations: $170,000-250,000 base salary plus discretionary bonus per performance
