TEST ENGINEER
JOB SUMMARY
The Test Engineer is responsible for designing equipment and conducting tests that support the Engineering department in their development of high-pressure waterblast tooling and accessories. This position will be part of a growing team that ensures our products exceed customer expectations by being safe, robust, and economical. As a Test Engineer, you will be working directly with mechanical, software and firmware engineers to test various components or products, help interpret results, identify defects and provide insight into improvements. This person will be expected to understand product requirements, define the scope of relevant testing with engineering support, utilize available equipment to complete testing in an appropriate timeframe, and catalog results in an organized way. This role is also responsible for ensuring that the engineering testing lab is well equipped, safe, and organized.
This position reports to the R&D Engineering Manager.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
R&D Test Support
- Work with product engineers to develop and execute waterblast tool, automated equipment, and system testing using standard test methods.
- Work with product engineers to develop and fabricate test fixtures and programs.
- Develop new test methods alongside product engineers to evaluate the safety, reliability and performance of products and solutions projects.
- Analyze, document, and communicate test results and recommendations to product engineers. Prepare detailed test reports, design journal entries, or emails to communicate results as required.
- Support CE, UKCA and other certification testing.
- Assist product engineers with technical decisions regarding usability, assembly, manufacturability, and sustainment.
- Support engineering in conducting competitor waterblast tool testing.
- Utilize Stoneage testing equipment to conduct both electrical and mechanical testing.
General Engineering Support:
- Attend design reviews and provide suggestions to enhance the manufacturability, maintainability, and cost of designs.
- Rework/modify products to achieve proper function, utilizing hand and machine tools.
- Clearly communicate required design changes to product engineers for part revisions and ECRs.
- Track and log all hours worked on specific projects.
- Ensure the engineering lab and equipment is safe and organized.
- Assist Operations with assembly and production testing during peak times.
- Communicate project status to R&D Engineering Manager.
- Perform any additional duties requested by R&D Engineering Manager
Solutions and New Product Support:
- Assemble and test engineering prototypes for custom solutions products.
- Review and evaluate field-tested units, existing products, and new product ideas - provide all relevant information to product engineer for incorporation and lessons learned.
- Assist in the transfer of development products to production including hands-on training, assembly or machining recommendations.
- Assist Solutions team in evaluating Solutions projects through direct contact with end users. Assist in quotation and design of custom projects as required.
- Develop and conduct testing for academic papers.
New Product Introduction Transition:
- Assist manufacturing in the building and testing of new products.
- Support Technical Product Managers with returned tool testing, rework, and repair.
- Review and evaluate field-tested units - provide all relevant information to product engineer for incorporation and lessons learned.
- Assist in the transfer of development products to production including hands-on training, assembly or machining recommendations to the Product Engineers and Operations.
- Assist NPI team with marketing or other media capture for product launch.
KNOWLEDGE AND TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in electrical, controls, or mechanical engineering from an accredited college or university.
- At least 2 years of relevant testing or product design experience.
- CAD proficiency (Solidworks or Altium is preferred).
- Working knowledge of mechanical, pneumatic and electrical systems.
- Experience programming Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), motion controllers and data acquisition equipment.
- Experience with LabVIEW, Python or similar software.
- Knowledge of materials properties, specifically stainless steel and aluminum.
- Working knowledge of MS Office software.
- Excellent problem solving and communication skills.
- Knowledge of industrial sensors such as thermocouples, encoders or pressure transducers.
Desirable:
- Hands-on machining experience.
- Experience in printed circuit board soldering and troubleshooting.
- Technical knowledge of industrial products.
- Experience with ERP/MRP software.
OTHER INFORMATION
- Extended working hours may be needed at peak times or when short staffed.
- Must be able to stand for extended periods of time.
- Must be able to lift heavy loads using proper lifting techniques as outlined in the StoneAge Employee Handbook.
