Position Overview

As a Technology Engineer Sr within PNC's Technology organization, you will be based in Pittsburgh, PA, Cleveland, OH, Birmingham, AL, Dallas, TX, Denver, CO.

We are seeking a Senior Technical Engineer specializing in Capacity Management This role is responsible for ensuring system performance, scalability, and reliability through proactive capacity planning, monitoring, and optimization of infrastructure, database and application platforms. The ideal candidate will bring deep technical expertise across Windows, Linux, database and JVM-based applications. The individual will be customer focused with the ability to explain technical concepts in easy-to-understand terms.

Key Responsibilities
Converged Infrastructure Optimization
• Optimize utilization across compute, storage, and network layers in tightly integrated systems.
• Identify inefficiencies across clusters, nodes, and storage tiers.
• Support cost optimization efforts by right-sizing resources.
Performance Engineering & Risk Mitigation
• Design and implement performance testing strategies to validate scaling capabilities.
• Proactively identify capacity constraints and systemic bottlenecks.
• Lead root cause analysis for performance degradation scenarios.
Incident Prevention & Support
• Contribute to root cause analysis of performance-related incidents.
• Develop preventative strategies to avoid capacity-related outages.
• Collaborate with SRE/operations teams on incident response.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
• Partner with SRE, DevOps, Cloud Engineering, and Application teams to align capacity with demand.
• Provide subject matter expertise for infrastructure design reviews and architecture boards.
• Mentor junior engineers and influence best practices across teams.

Required Qualifications
• Experience in infrastructure engineering, with at least 3+ years focused on capacity management.
• Strong expertise in converged or hyperconverged infrastructure (e.g., VMware, OpenShift).
• Deep understanding of:
oDistributed systems and cluster-based architecture
oStorage systems (SAN, NAS, SDS)
oNetwork capacity and throughput management
• Experience with containerized environments (Kubernetes capacity planning).
• Experience with monitoring and observability platforms (vROps, Turbonomic, Dynatrace, Prometheus, Grafana, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with large-scale enterprise or hyperscale environments.
• Familiarity with ITIL processes and operational excellence frameworks.
• Background in SRE, DevOps, or Platform Engineering.

  • Leads in the development of the most complex new and emerging technologies and selects appropriate platforms, integrates and configures solutions. Leverages technical knowledge and industry experience to design, build and maintain technology solutions.
  • Develops software components and hardware for new and emerging technology projects; aligns these with business strategies and objectives.
  • Consults junior staff regarding complex issues and best practices.
  • Provides a systematic analysis on the most complex client requirements within the traceability framework and resolves any functional problems encountered.
  • Oversees the quality of complex project deliverables while ensuring that they are in compliance with relevant standards and processes.

Pay Transparency

Base Salary: $91,000.00 - $169,000.00

Salaries may vary based on geographic location, market data and on individual skills, experience, and education. This role is incentive eligible with the payment based upon company, business and/or individual performance.
