Overview

Job Summary

 

The ideal candidate will create, edit, and maintain clear, accurate, and user-focused technical documentation for mission systems, applications, and processes. This role translates complex scientific, engineering, and technical concepts into concise, easy-to-understand documentation for technical and non-technical audiences.

 

The Technical Writer works closely with customers, engineers, developers, and program staff to convert functional and operational requirements into detailed technical documentation and specifications that support system development, operations, compliance, and end-user adoption.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

The Technical Writer will:

  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, including How-to guides, User manuals, Reference documents, Cheat sheets, Instructions and standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Translate scientific and technical concepts into clear, plain-language documentation
  • Work directly with customers to translate functional requirements into detailed technical specifications
  • Collaborate with software developers, engineers, and system administrators to document system functionality and workflows
  • Produce developer-oriented documentation in support of system design, development, and maintenance
  • Design and apply documentation templates, formatting standards, and output styles
  • Ensure documentation accuracy, consistency, and compliance with contract and organizational standards
  • Manage multiple documentation tasks simultaneously while meeting tight deadlines
  • Edit, proofread, and review content for grammar, clarity, and technical accuracy
  • Maintain version control and updates for evolving systems and processes
  • Support documentation related to SDLC, RMF, and IC IT environments
Requirements

Skills and Experience

 

The Technical Writer must have:

  • Active Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information (TS/SCI) security clearance
  • 5+ years of experience supporting technical documentation efforts within Department of Defense (DoD) or Intelligence Community (IC) environments
  • Proven ability to distill complex technical information into clear, concise, and user-friendly documentation
  • Demonstrated experience creating developer-oriented, system, and technical documentation
  • Experience working directly with technical, engineering, and software development teams
  • Experience using multiple documentation tools to Develop and maintain document templates, Format and manipulate output styles, and Produce professional technical documentation
  • Strong understanding of Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), Risk Management Framework (RMF), Intelligence Community Information Technology Enterprise (IC ITE) concepts, and Technical and cybersecurity terminology used in DIA or Intelligence Community environments
  • Experience supporting DoD or Intelligence Community documentation efforts
  • Familiarity with compliance, accreditation, and RMF documentation requirements

Education and Certifications

 

The Technical Writer must meet the following:

 

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Technical Communication, English, Communications, Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related discipline
  • Relevant experience may be substituted in lieu of a degree
  • DoD 8140 compliance required, as applicable to role

Preferred

  • Technical Writing or Technical Communication certification
  • ITIL Foundation
  • CompTIA Security+ CE (for roles supporting RMF or security documentation)

Security Clearance

 

Must be a U.S. Citizen. A high-level Department of Defense active security clearance is/may be required. Applicants selected will be subject to a security investigation and may need to meet eligibility requirements for access to government information.

 

Physical Requirements

 

Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods of time and typing and reading from a computer screen. The candidate must have enough mobility, including bending, reaching, and kneeling, to complete daily duties in a prompt and efficient manner, and that may include lifting up to thirty pounds, as necessary.

 

Posted Salary RangeUSD $120,000.00 - USD $130,000.00 /Yr.
