Description:

This role will be based in Mississauga, Canada. This is a hybrid role that has a requirement of working at least three days a week in the office.

The Technical Underwriter is responsible for quoting new business, managing monthly in-force renewals, and preparing pricing alternatives for plan design changes. This role supports Sales, Senior Underwriters and leadership by delivering timely, accurate pricing and renewal positions, ensuring sound risk assessment, and maintaining high service levels for internal and external stakeholders.

We will count on you to:
  • Prepare and deliver timely, accurate, and competitive quotes for new business by analyzing census data, claims history, plan design, and relevant underwriting factors.
  • Manage monthly in-force renewals for assigned blocks: calculate renewal positions, post results to internal systems/websites, and escalate anomalies for resolution.
  • Develop and price plan alternates for in-force groups and present clear cost comparisons to support retention and client requests.
  • Partner with Sales Representatives during negotiations to explain pricing rationale, evaluate concessions, and maintain profitability targets; obtain required approvals as needed.
  • Maintain and enhance Excel-based models and other pricing tools; create or modify templates to support quoting and renewal workflows.
  • Review and validate analyses prepared by junior staff to ensure consistent pricing assumptions and sound underwriting decisions.
  • Participate in cross-functional initiatives to automate recurring tasks, improve data quality, and reduce manual effort in renewal and quoting processes.
  • Provide clear, timely verbal and written communications to Sales, New Business, and leadership; coach and mentor junior team members to elevate technical capability and model a growth mindset.

What you need to have:
  • Minimum five years' Group Insurance underwriting or pricing experience with hands-on quoting of new business and management of renewals.
  • Deep knowledge of group benefits underwriting principles, funding methods, products, plan design features, and common underwriting practices.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (complex formulas, pivot tables) and strong skills with MS Office applications.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities; comfortable working with large datasets and performing financial/cost projections.
  • Proven ability to manage high-volume workloads and deadlines with accuracy, attention to detail, and adaptability in fast-paced environments.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; able to explain technical pricing concepts to Sales and non-technical stakeholders and work both independently and collaboratively with sound judgment.

What makes you stand out:
  • Post-secondary education in actuarial science, mathematics, statistics, finance, business, or a related discipline.
  • Relevant professional designations are an asset.
  • Bilingual (French and English), written and spoken, is an asset.

The applicable base salary range for this role is $61,100 to $111,100.

The base pay offered will be determined on factors such as experience, skills, training, location, certifications, education, and any applicable minimum wage requirements. Decisions will be determined on a case-by-case basis. In addition to the base salary, this position may be eligible for performance-based incentives.

We are excited to offer a competitive total rewards package which includes health and welfare benefits, tuition assistance, retirement programs as well as employee assistance programs.

This is a New position.
