Technical Lead - Java (Backend Engineering)

About the role

As a Technical Lead - Java, you will make an impact by designing and delivering scalable, high-performance backend services for customer-facing banking platforms. You will be a valued member of a cross-functional Agile team and work collaboratively with architects, product owners, and engineering teams to build modern, cloud-native solutions.

In this role, you will:
  • Design, develop, and own scalable Java-based microservices and APIs with a focus on performance, reliability, and maintainability
  • Lead architecture decisions and implement cloud-native backend solutions supporting large-scale, high-availability systems
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership, guiding teams on design patterns, coding standards, and engineering best practices
  • Collaborate closely with stakeholders to translate business requirements into robust technical solutions
  • Mentor engineers through code reviews, knowledge sharing, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement
  • Build and deploy applications on cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or OpenShift) using containerization and orchestration technologies
  • Drive CI/CD automation and improve engineering efficiency using modern tools and practices
  • Ensure system quality through testing strategies, monitoring, and production support

What you need to have to be considered
  • 10+ years of experience in Java backend development
  • Strong expertise in Spring Boot, microservices architecture, REST APIs, SQL, and Spring Security
  • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or OpenShift)
  • Proficiency with containerization and orchestration tools (Docker, Kubernetes) and CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions)
  • Proven experience in leading technical teams and driving delivery in an Agile environment
  • Strong understanding of system design, scalability, and performance optimization

These will help you stand out
  • Experience with AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot or similar
  • Exposure to monitoring and observability tools (e.g., Splunk, Dynatrace)
  • Familiarity with frontend frameworks such as Angular
  • Experience in banking or financial services domain
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to thrive in fast-paced, distributed environments

Canadian Pay Transparency Statement

We regularly assess market data to ensure we offer a competitive compensation package for our associates. The base salary for this position ranges between $ 71,000 to $112,000 per year. Where the successful candidate may fall within the range depends on relevant education, work and/or management experience and other business-related and job-necessary qualifications. This position is also eligible for Cognizant's discretionary annual performance-based bonus, as well as benefits that support your physical, mental and financial wellbeing.
