We are looking for a Technical Director - Emergency Preparedness to join our team based in the US East Region. As a Technical Director at GHD, you will not only mentor and guide the team but also take the reins in environmental emergencies, collaborating closely with clients and agencies to ensure effective response and resolution.

Your role will extend beyond project management to include business development and client expansion activities, where your expertise in environmental engineering, geology, or related fields will shine. GHD has more than 100 offices across North America with over 500 staff trained in emergency response and emergency management procedures. Listed below is a management role currently open to grow and further develop the GHD FIRST business sector within GHD.

Working with an energetic and high-performing team, this position offers a variety of work and will see you involved in:
  • Client & Customer Management (External): Manage key client and customer relationships. Likely to involve using account teams to maintain customer satisfaction and loyalty.
  • Community of Practice Management: Contribute strongly on a strategically significant area to a community of practice in a defined area of expertise or consulting, or lead on an area of expertise or consulting practice, to contribute to thought leadership and to develop innovative practice among colleagues.
  • Data Collection and Analysis: Manage a segment of the organization's data collection and analysis activities.
  • Document Preparation: Develop and write materials that are highly visible, such as sensitive press releases or speeches to critical audiences.
  • Environmental Impact Assessment: Manage a significant aspect of environmental impact assessments, such as data analysis, mitigation strategy planning, or report preparation.
  • Environmental Risk Management: within a function, aligning risk activities with environmental regulations, and the organization's sustainability initiatives.
  • Functional Strategy Formation: Lead the development and implementation of strategy for a significant area of responsibility, anticipating complex issues, challenges, and opportunities and ensuring integration with wider corporate strategy.
  • Health, Safety, and Environment: Ensure that business activities and individuals (e.g., employees, contractors, and visitors) within the area of responsibility adhere to the organization's health, safety, and environment (HSE) policies, procedures, and mandatory instructions, to safeguard the environment, protect the well-being of individuals, and minimize business risk.
  • Organizational Capability Building: Evaluate the capabilities of staff within the department to identify gaps and prioritize development activities. Implement the organization's formal development frameworks within the area of responsibility. Coach and mentor others to support the development of the organization's talent pool.
  • Performance Management: Manage and report on performance within the department or area of responsibility; set appropriate performance objectives for direct reports and hold individuals accountable for achieving them; take appropriate corrective action where necessary to ensure the achievement of annual business objectives.
  • Policies and Procedures Development: Develop policies, procedures, and related guidelines for an important area of responsibility within a function, ensuring compliance with external requirements and integration with the broader functional policy framework.
  • Project Management: Manage a portfolio of major projects in line with the overall project management strategy.
  • Request for Bid Solicitation/Proposal/Tender Response: Gather information and resources and draft and complete proposals in response to the most complex bid solicitations, request for proposal, and request for tender to create the best chance of being awarded the contract. May lead a team to develop tenders/proposals and fulfill all process requirements (in terms of deadlines, documentation, etc.) in response to bid solicitations, request for proposal, and request for tender.
  • Secure Permissions and Consents: Ensure that relevant permissions and consents are secured for development sites.
  • Solutions Analysis: Develop innovative solutions by integrating and analyzing complex and diverse information sources.


What you will bring to the team:
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering, Geology, Environmental Science, or a related field
  • 7+ years of experience in one or more of the following:
    • Environmental emergency response and preparedness
    • Environmental site assessments and remediation
  • 7+ years of Project Management Experience
  • Track record of revenue growth through Business Development activities
  • Ability to effectively communicate with other technical professionals, clients, and regulatory officials
  • Positive attitude, strong interpersonal skills, team player, and a leader
  • Strong mentorship and coaching skills to assist with the development of junior staff
  • Strong delegation skills to ensure that emergency projects are staffed and managed appropriately
  • Willingness to travel up to 60% of the time (mostly local, some regional)
  • Being on-call 24/7/365 and responding to call-outs and requests for technical assistance during non-routine working hours
  • Strong organizational skills to assist with the day-to-day operations of the business and organize logistically complex responses/projects
  • Experienced in emergency preparedness, air monitoring, environmental assessment/sampling, ICS, SCAT, regulatory compliance (PHMSA, EPA, DOT)
  • Experience with railroad, pipeline, and oil & gas-related emergencies

  • Holiday Pay - Holiday pay is provided for eligible employees. GHD observes 9 holidays per year. Holiday pay will be based on the regular set schedule for the employee
  • Wellness Benefit- Regular full-term employees are eligible to participate in the wellness reimbursement program. Salary Range: $136,000-$238,000 based on experience and location.
