How You'll Make an Impact The Mortgage Underwriting Team Lead is responsible for underwriting all first and second mortgages within allocated approval authority while monitoring the mortgage pipeline to ensure timely loan decisions. This role provides leadership to underwriting staff, drives operational effectiveness, and maintains compliance with investor, regulatory, and credit union requirements through a hands-on approach.
What You'll Be Doing - Assure all mortgage loan files are underwritten within delegated authority and in compliance with secondary market guidelines, program requirements, credit union policies, and regulatory requirements.
- Review and evaluate loan files for accuracy, completeness, data integrity, and sound credit risk assessment.
- Monitor and manage the mortgage pipeline to ensure timely processing, balanced workloads, and achievement of service-level goals.
- Serve as a subject matter expert for mortgage products, underwriting guidelines, and complex loan scenarios.
- Provide leadership, coaching, training, and performance support to underwriting staff.
- Identify and implement process improvements, workflow efficiencies, and automation solutions.
- Leverage technology, automation, and AI-enhanced tools to improve underwriting efficiency, decision quality, workflow management, and member experience.
- Analyze production and quality metrics to identify trends and recommend improvements.
- Participate in system enhancements, digital mortgage initiatives, and departmental projects.
- Collaborate with Mortgage Loan Officers, Operations, Secondary Market, and third-party vendors.
- Stay current on industry regulations, mortgage products, investor guidelines, and emerging technologies.
- Ensure adherence to Credit Union policies and all applicable regulations.
- Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned.
What You Bring to the Team - Bachelor's degree in finance, business administration, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum of five (5) years of related experience at a credit union, bank, or other financial institution.
- Minimum of three (3) years of leadership, supervisory, or team management experience, including coaching, performance management, workload allocation, and employee development.
- Preferred: Demonstrated experience utilizing technology, workflow automation, digital mortgage platforms, and AI-enabled tools to improve operational efficiency, decision-making, reporting, or member service.
- Excellent problem-solving, organizational, analytical, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Strong decision-making and time-management skills.
- Results driven, service oriented, self-motivated, and able to work independently.
- Detailed knowledge of secondary market guidelines and regulatory requirements.
- Comply with SAFE Act requirements and NMLRS registration requirements.
- High degree of integrity and trustworthiness.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Encompass or similar loan origination systems.

Compensation & Rewards Compensation for this role is $100,000 - $110,000 with the potential for discretionary incentive compensation based on both company and individual performance.
