PetIQ is seeking an experienced Tax Manager to own a critical set of tax functions within our tax and accounting team. This is role will take direct ownership of sales and use tax, income tax compliance and provision, and M&A tax workstreams, driving them from analysis through final deliverable with minimal oversight. The ideal candidate brings 2-3 years of Big 4 public accounting experience, is ready to step into a role with real accountability for outcomes, and is comfortable operating in a fast-paced, private equity-backed environment with frequent cross-functional collaboration and direct exposure to senior finance leadership.
Roles & Responsibilities:- Manage the day-to-day relationship with external advisors (including Big 4 firms), directing their work on technical tax positions, audits, and special projects to ensure deadlines and quality standards are met.
- Own the quarterly and annual income tax provision process in accordance with ASC 740 from preparation through final review and serve as the primary point of contact with external auditors on provision matters.
- Own federal and state income tax compliance, including managing return preparation (outsourced), estimated payments, and audit responses, and act as the escalation point for technical issues that arise.
- Review tax due diligence and structuring analysis for M&A transactions, including purchase price allocation considerations, NOL analysis, and post-close integration planning, presenting findings and recommendations directly to finance leadership.
- Own the sales and use tax function (outsourced) end-to-end: nexus analysis, filings, and related compliance across multiple states and business channels, serving as the primary decision-maker alongside our external tax advisor.
- Collaborate with accounting, FP&A, and legal teams to ensure tax considerations are reflected in broader business decisions.
- Own tax research and documentation of technical positions, including drafting memos that support return positions and transaction treatment, with accountability for the technical accuracy of the final position.
- Drive process improvements and automation initiatives to increase efficiency of tax compliance and reporting functions.
- Monthly accounting journal entries and reconciliations for tax accounts.
Minimum Qualifications: - A combination of private and public experience with a focus on tax, with demonstrated readiness to own workstreams independently rather than operate in a purely reviewer-supported capacity.
- 3-4 years of experience in public accounting firm, Big 4 preferred.
- Strong working knowledge of ASC 740 provision concepts, corporate income tax, and knowledge of sales and use tax.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally in a dynamic, deadline-driven environment.
Education Requirements:- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or related field; CPA or active pursuit of CPA preferred.
