About the Department

The Engineering IT (ENGRIT) team serves as the central IT organization for the College of Engineering at NC State University. The primary role of ENGRIT is to address the IT requirements of all College of Engineering undergraduate and graduate students that are not covered by the university's central Office of Information Technology (OIT). It also strives to deliver high-quality, supplemental IT services designed to enhance students' learning and extracurricular activities relevant to their fields of study.

ENGRIT extends support to the College of Engineering administrative staff and faculty, and to all departments that lack local IT personnel. Its ultimate objective is to ensure all IT operations within the college are effective and efficient, thereby enabling the teaching, research, and extension activities to be performed to their highest potential.

Essential Job Duties

The Systems Manager is charged with technical leadership and executive oversight for the ENGRIT Systems Team, administrators of highly complex Windows, Linux and cloud computer systems. This team is tasked with providing strategic direction and operational support for a varied portfolio of infrastructure including cloud-based, local data center, and on-premises resources.

These resources cater to an extensive constituency covering needs extending from the university level to individual faculty members. It is especially important that this position works closely with the Office of Information Technology's security and compliance office to develop sandbox areas so that faculty, students and staff can experiment with new and emerging technologies (like agentic AI) without impacting the integrity of production systems.

Systems Group Management
  • Provide technical leadership and executive oversight for the ENGRIT Systems Team.
  • Manage a team of administrators for highly complex Windows, Linux, and cloud computer systems.
  • Accountable for project management and supervision, including the execution of planning and status meetings.
  • Determine project priority and urgency.
  • Delegate resources to ensure the timely completion of tasks.
  • Provide responsive technical assistance to the ENGRIT Service Desk and Web Services Team.
  • Support local departmental IT support groups for engagements involving ENGRIT-supported systems.


Infrastructure Strategic Assessment, Planning, and Implementation
  • Establish the overarching technical vision and implementation for the college's IT infrastructure.
  • Provide strategic direction and operational support for a varied portfolio of infrastructure (cloud-based, local data center, and on-premises resources).
  • Coordinate the acquisition of hardware for coursework and research across all facets of computing.
  • Deliver necessary infrastructure to enhance business processes within the college through AI technologies.
  • Proactively plan for the complex impact of infrastructure work on varied user bases.


Security, Monitoring, and Compliance
  • Work closely with the Office of Information Technology's security and compliance office.
  • Develop sandbox areas for experimentation with new technologies (like agentic AI) without impacting production systems.
  • Maintain the integrity of production systems.
  • Understand and implement disparate architectural models and varied regulatory requirements including Federal, State, and University mandates.


College Representation on University Committees and Task Forces
  • Cater to an extensive constituency covering needs extending from the university level to individual faculty members.
  • Represent the college on task forces related to systems, infrastructure, and AI technologies.
  • Serve as the technical lead for college-wide interests in university-level infrastructure discussions.


Faculty Research Consultations
  • Enable faculty to obtain specific computing resources required for research.
    Consult on specialized infrastructure needs related to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and general engineering research.
    Address the disparate architectural needs of individual faculty members and researchers.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or IT related field from an appropriately accredited institution and six years of progressive experience in the related area including at least two years of managerial experience OR
  • Associate degree in computer science or IT related field from an appropriately accredited institution and seven years of progressive experience in the related area including at least two years of managerial experience OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience


Other Required Qualifications
  • 5+ Years of experience in and ability to manage teams of IT professionals and temporary student workers, to include preparation of position descriptions, hiring practices, mentoring and coaching technical staff, and knowledge of University personnel policies and practices.
  • 5+ years of IT budgetary experience.
  • Knowledge and experience in a formal service management (ITSM) environment, to include the analysis of data within a service management tool such as ServiceNow.
  • Project management experience
  • Working knowledge of Windows, Mac and Linux managed environment infrastructure components such as Active Directory, MECM, Puppet, Foreman, JAMF, or related IT management systems
  • Asset management and monitoring
  • Ability to communicate tactfully and effectively, verbally and in writing, with both technically oriented and non-technical correspondents.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with HPC environments involving faculty research projects
  • Understanding of automated workflows, CI/CD pipelines, cloud infrastructure automation
