Full Job Description
The Supplier Quality Development Manager (SQDM) develops, implements, leads and drives supplier quality strategies for the supplier quality and development groups. SQDM provides local leadership in the implementation, execution and enforcement of commodity quality strategies in support of the business growth.

The SQDM is responsible for managing a group of salaried and hourly direct reports. SQDM defines criteria for quality competitiveness evaluation for new manufacturing technologies, new products and new suppliers and secures highly competitive suppliers for the sourcing pipeline.

Supplier Quality Strategy:
  • Create, execute, communicate and maintain supplier quality strategy for commodities
  • Manage a team of direct reports to facilitate execution of supplier quality goals and objectives
  • Coordinates the Supplier Quality Managment Engineers (SQME) activities for New Product Development and/or changes related to current products.
  • Create and implement Supplier Vetting Strategy, Supplier Capability Assessment, Supplier Selection (Pre-Sourcing) and Development Strategy, and Key Supplier Performance Metrics
  • In collaboration with Global Supply Management Manager and Quality Director, develop and implement supplier quality roadmap
  • Create and implement global commodity quality requirements
  • Benchmark suppliers on Best in Commodity production strategies
  • Identify new technologies that support BorgWarner's growth and product leadership position in the market.
  • Identify and develop Suppliers that meet and/or exceed BorgWarner long-term expectations that result in a differentiation in the marketplace.
  • Create supplier quality vetting strategies:
    • Develop process, and roadmaps for vetting process in respective commodity
    • Execute and assess supplier capability
  • Execute global quality assessment and Training of suppliers and BW SDEs
  • Track and communicate global commodity industry trends, manufacturing strategies, technology factors and opportunities in the global market place.
  • Establish KPI to monitor supplier performance over mid and long-term
  • Monitors supplier performance and coordinates visits to those domestic suppliers, US, Canada and MX, impacting both the efficiency and cost of scrap at the manufacturing sites

Supplier Quality Management:
  • Center of Expertise for manufacturing process of the respective commodity
  • Develop model for compliance matrix and assess supplier's competencies to assure quality competitiveness in pursuit of new business opportunities.
  • Develop direct reports to lead supplier quality vetting and selection process
  • Work closely with Global Commodity Manager and Engineering to improve Quality/Cost/Time
  • Identify quality improvement opportunities. Support and drive continuous improvement programs at suppliers and within BorgWarner
  • Establish and lead supplier technical site assessment. Coordinate and perform supplier process audits, corrective action audits, and quality assessment including new supplier assessments in cooperation with GCM and Engineering
  • Participate and support key supplier sourcing process
  • Lead resolution of quality issues with suppliers as needed.
  • Develop direct reports to coordinate cross functional technical problem resolution at or related to supplier.
  • Serve as escalation role in complex supplier quality related issues
  • Conduct supplier quality training at suppliers to meet BW requirements
  • Develop and train local Supplier Development Engineers in the respective commodity

Knowledge/Skills
  • Working Knowledge of Microsoft PowerPoint, MS Word, and MS Excel

Additional Information:
  • Travel is occasionally required, up to 50-75% of the time.

Business impact:
  • Targeted Commodities: Electronics and Misc. Electronics, Forgings, Die-Castings, Stamping, Bearing and Bushings, Seals and Powdered Metals
  • Size of commodities: $250mn to $500mn per year.
  • Targeted suppliers: 100 to 250 suppliers.

  • Wear PPE when appropriate in designated campus areas.
  • Lifting shoulder high up to 35 lbs. on occasion.

Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or technical field (e.g. Mechanical, Industrial, Production technology) with solid technical background
  • 7+ years of professional experience in Quality, Production, Logistics, Cost/Process Planning
  • Strong communication skills, team player, comprehensive thinking, management skills and highly flexible
  • Commodity experience required
  • 7+ years Supply Management experience working in Automotive Production environment preferred
  • Increasing responsibility in an automotive production environment
  • Proven record in Manufacturing, Supplier Quality and Process Improvement initiatives
  • Demonstrated competence in negotiating skills and assessing vendors
  • Fluency in English and Foreign Language preferred
  • Excellent Quality Orientation
  • Ability to provide training, coaching and mentoring to mid-level SDE's
  • Ability to travel 50%-60% of the time
  • Six Sigma Black Belt preferred
  • High level of discipline and work ethic
  • Strong organizational, task management and prioritization skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, analytical and leadership skills
  • Fluent in written and spoken English
  • VDA 6.3 Process auditor and knowledge of APQP, FMEA, Six Sigma, tools for process capability analysis and problem solving techniques
  • Strong MS-Office and project management methods skills
  • Prior experience in preparing and delivering information in presentation form to high level management (BorgWarner internal, suppliers and customers)
  • Representing BorgWarner in high level meetings with external partners
  • Able to independently troubleshoot issues/concerns and determine course of action
  • Willingness to travel both foreign and domestic with high flexibility
