What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the Science/Engineering Project Leader 2 or Science/Engineering Project Leader 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Space Systems Assurance and Implementation (ISR-7) Group is seeking a motivated and collaborative Science/Engineering Project Leader to join our team. Los Alamos National Laboratory's Intelligence and Space Research (ISR) Division designs, builds, delivers, and operates innovative ground-air-space-based measurement systems that support scientific discovery and national security missions. ISR's more than 400 instruments fly on over 200 satellites, including numerous NASA missions such as Voyager and the most recent Mars Rover missions.

Science/Engineering Project Leader 2 ($106,400-$176,000)
In this role, you will serve as an integral member of a program conducting suborbital flight tests. The primary responsibility is to manage a variety of subcontracts for efforts such as launch services, flight vehicle engineering, telemetry and communications, simulations and analyses, and additional services needed to execute these missions. While the successful applicant does not need to have an intimate understanding of all engineering disciplines relating to a subcontract, they must possess enough awareness of the tasks and processes to provide proper technical oversight and ensure the subcontract work scope is executed in accordance with project, mission, and institutional requirements. A technical background in one or more related disciplines is highly desirable.

Science/Engineering Project Leader 3 ($128,000-$215,900)
At the higher level, this position will execute the same scope of responsibilities as at the lower level but will be expected to do so with greater independence, autonomy, and agency in decision-making. This increased responsibility comes from greater professional experience, education, and technical credentials. In addition, the SEPL3 will integrate more fully into the project leadership team, helping to shape mission strategy and execution.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

• Working knowledge and experience as a technical contributor in a science and engineering environment.
• Working knowledge of and experience executing subcontracting processes, including developing statements of work.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex technical and nontechnical information effectively with colleagues, suppliers, and project leadership.
• Experience managing supplier, subcontractor, or vendor activities, including the review and confirmation of technical milestones.
• Ability to independently manage competing priorities, take strategic initiative, and resolve complex problems creatively, efficiently, and diplomatically.
• Proficiency with business and operations systems and standard software applications (e.g., Microsoft, Adobe).
• Ability to gain a DOE Q clearance.

Additional Job Requirements for Science/Engineering Project Leader 3:

• Advanced knowledge of and demonstrated experience executing subcontracting processes, including developing statements of work.
• Advanced knowledge of and demonstrated experience in project management principles and practices, including ensuring resources are available to complete project deliverables within scope, schedules, and budgets.
• Significant experience developing and sustaining effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a bachelor's degree in a science- or engineering-related field from an accredited institution and 5 years directly related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a bachelor's degree in a science- or engineering-related field from an accredited institution and 8 years directly related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level an advanced degree is typically expected.

Desired Qualifications:

• Experience with procurement and support tools such as SAP Ariba, Oracle, Jira, Confluence, homegrown software, or other procurement or supplier management systems.
• Current project management certification (e.g., PMP, CAPM, or equivalent).
• Working knowledge of process improvement methodologies (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma, or equivalent).
• Experience working in a national laboratory or federal environment.

Physical Requirements:
Physical movement between buildings located primarily within a half-mile radius, which may include movement across uneven and/or inclined ground.
Physical movement within large interior facility spaces and corridors, which may require travel up and down stairs.
Direct interaction with hardware, equipment, and instruments in office and laboratory environments.

Work Environment:

Work Location : The work location for this position is hybrid and is located in Los Alamos. Hybrid is defined as working partially onsite/partially offsite but within 2 hours ground commute of this location. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
