Full Job Description
This role is restricted to U.S. persons (i.e., U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and other protected individuals under the Immigration and Naturalization Act, 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)) due to access to export-controlled technology. FTT will require proof of status prior to employment.

General Job Summary:

The structural engineer will be responsible for the structural design and analysis of new or upgraded turbomachinery hardware, focused on stress, vibration, and life analyses. Through physics based finite element analysis and classical hand calculations, the structural engineer will analyze complex components and assemblies exposed to extreme loading and temperature environments. Working in an interdisciplinary team, the engineer will evolve the design based on these results to meet all requirements. Specific responsibilities include assisting teams with analytical calculations and design support and ensuring that structural analysis is accurate and documented properly. Engineers will be provided with mentoring and guidance from world-class turbomachinery engineers.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Uses classical hand calculations along with finite element analyses to evaluate conceptual, preliminary, and final structural evaluation of turbomachinery components and assemblies.
  • Ensures that structural analysis follows accepted methods, meets the appropriate internal and/or customer requirements, and is properly checked and documented.
  • Supports field or production issues, such as root cause investigations and disposition of manufacturing nonconformances.
  • Organizes and participates in technical round-table meetings with team members, discipline experts, and the Chief Engineer's office.
  • Communicates regularly with team leads, program managers, and customers to provide project technical and schedule status.
  • Exercises sound engineering judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action.
  • Other job duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibility: None

  • Strong working knowledge of fundamental mathematical methods, solid mechanics, and strength of materials. A good understanding of structural analysis methods & criteria (related to stress, vibration, fatigue/fracture mechanics, etc.) is also required.
  • Knowledge of turbomachinery component structural behavior and failure modes is strongly preferred.
  • Thorough understanding of finite element analysis (ANSYS experience preferred).
  • Some ability to create or manipulate geometry in CAD software and interpret engineering drawings.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, with the ability to create and deliver clear and concise technical presentations both internally and to customers.
  • Maintain sensitive and confidential information as required by company and government requirements.
  • Have a willingness and ability to learn and utilize company technology for company required purposes, including, for example, training, reviewing, and signing policies and procedures, benefits enrollment, changes, and more.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to maintain knowledge, skills, and abilities as it pertains to your job.
  • Ability to obtain/maintain security clearance.

Education and Experience:
  • BS/MS in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in structural analysis. Strong preference for individuals with a background in turbomachinery.

Work Environment/Physical Requirements:
  • Office and/or manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to sit and stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to perform repetitive motion (keyboarding, mouse, phones, rotating wrist, using tools/equipment).

Travel Requirements:

Yes, if applicable.
