Full Job Description
Thomas & Hutton is currently seeking an experienced Structural Engineer in Charleston, SC or Savannah, GA. The ideal candidate will be a licensed civil/structural engineer or have the ability to obtain license within one year. They shall have a background in the analysis and design of steel, concrete, masonry, and wood structures consisting of Bridge, Building, and Site Structural design. Experience in Marine Structural design and knowledge of permitting in the Southeast, coastal environment is a plus. Successful candidates will be production oriented with the ability to create construction plans using CAD. The candidate shall have knowledge of construction industry practices and be capable of working with clients, regulatory agencies, building officials, contractors and members of the Structural Department.

The ideal candidate will be expected to be involved with the concept planning, assessments, design and construction administration of a large variety of structures for both internal and external clients, public and private. Markets for structural services include industrial, commercial, municipal, marine, institutional, residential and energy. Structures may include, but are not limited to, treatment plants, marinas, bulkheads, piers, wharves, bridges, buildings, drainage and water control structures, pump stations, monuments, specialty equipment foundations, and erosion control solutions. Design and analysis of concrete, wood, structural steel, cold formed steel, masonry, aluminum, and composite materials will be required.

This position requires strong technical skills as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills. This role requires regular interaction with other structural engineers, our clients, other senior level managers within the firm, subconsultants and contractors.

Typical Duties:

  • Communicate and interact with clients, providing high levels of client service.
  • Perform coordination with other design disciplines and clients.
  • Perform analysis and design of a variety of structures, with any material.
  • Perform structural condition assessments of existing structures and write reports.
  • Create construction documents, including drawings in Revit and AutoCAD and technical specifications.
  • Ensure project designs are completed in accordance with a variety of building codes and local amendments.
  • Perform construction services, including submittal reviews, site visits and responding to contractor questions.
  • Perform design peer reviews (reports, calculations, drawings, specifications) of colleagues.
  • Mentor and assist other engineers and engineering interns within the structural department.


Minimum Requirements:

Experience: minimum 8 years of structural design experience.

Education: Bachelor's degree in Structural Civil Engineering. US PE Certification required SE Certification strongly preferred

Skills:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, Mathcad, Excel, and Enercalc
  • Proven ability to multi-task, appropriately prioritize workflow and complete tasks within budget.
  • Must be a self-starter and be able to work with team members.
  • Ability to perform field work for assessments and construction observation in a variety of environments.
  • Ability to solve problems and evaluate a variety of options.
  • Ability to periodically travel to other offices.
  • Excellent time management skills.Proficiency with finite element modeling programs, primarily RISA and SAP2000.
