Full Job Description
POSITION TITLE: Staff Software Engineer

REPORTS TO: Sr. Director of Engineering -- Data Platform

DIRECT REPORTS: N/A

LOCATION (Club / Corporate): Corporate -- CO Office

COMPENSATION: $162,000-$180,000

BONUS ELIGIBILITY: 10% annual bonus potential

PURPOSE

The Staff Software Engineer serves as a senior technical leader responsible for the architecture, design, development, and operational reliability of enterprise software systems supporting VASA Fitness digital products and operational platforms. This role provides technical leadership across complex initiatives, establishes engineering standards and best practices, and partners with cross-functional teams to deliver scalable, secure, and maintainable software solutions.

The Staff Software Engineer contributes to technical strategy, system architecture, software delivery practices, and engineering process improvement while mentoring engineers and influencing technical direction across the organization.

KEY RESPONSIBILITES AND COMPETENCIES

  • Lead the architecture, design, development, deployment, and support of enterprise software applications and distributed systems.
  • Provide technical leadership across complex, cross-functional engineering initiatives and platform modernization efforts.
  • Design and support scalable APIs, integrations, event-driven systems, and cloud-native applications.
  • Establish and promote software engineering standards, architectural patterns, development practices, and operational procedures.
  • Lead technical design reviews, code reviews, and architectural discussions across engineering teams.
  • Partner with engineering leadership, product teams, and business stakeholders to evaluate technical solutions, priorities, and implementation strategies.
  • Support system reliability, observability, scalability, security, and operational performance across critical production systems.
  • Contribute to cloud architecture, infrastructure strategy, CI/CD practices, and software delivery automation.
  • Mentor and support software engineers through technical guidance, collaboration, and knowledge sharing.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives related to engineering processes, software quality, testing, automation, and operational excellence.
  • Evaluate and implement emerging technologies, development tools, and engineering practices, including AI-assisted development and automation technologies.
  • Participate in operational support, incident response, root cause analysis, and technical troubleshooting activities as required.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • 12+ years of professional software engineering, with a real track record at staff, principal, or equivalent level. We care about scope of impact, not titles on a resume.
  • Demonstrated shipping velocity. Tell us specifically what you have built and shipped in the last 12 months and what it does in production today.
  • Deep work in at least two of TypeScript, Python, Go, or Rust, and credible fluency in the others. We choose the right tool per problem and expect Staff engineers to lead that choice.
  • Strong AWS architecture -- Lambda, ECS/EKS, RDS, DynamoDB, SQS/SNS, API Gateway, IAM, VPC. You have designed systems end-to-end on AWS and operated them under real load.
  • Concrete AI tooling work you can talk through in depth -- harnesses you built, agents you put into production, evals you wrote, automations that changed how a team operates. "I use Copilot daily" is not the bar.
  • Experience owning critical systems through their full lifecycle -- design, build, scale, operate, retire.
  • Strong distributed-systems instincts: idempotency, retries, schema evolution, partial failure, eventual consistency, and the operational consequences of each.
  • Communication that lands. You can write a design doc engineers actually read, run a code review without making people defensive, and explain trade-offs to a non-technical executive.
  • Bonus: prior staff-level work at a lean, AI-forward team; consumer-scale mobile/web experience; or building developer tooling around LLMs.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Primary work in a fitness facility and office setting. Temperature variations can occur. The environment includes some ambient noise such as talking and use of gym equipment and machinery.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS
  • Talking: Especially where one must frequently convey detailed or important instructions or ideas accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Physical Strength: Sitting, standing, and walking. Must be able to lift, push, pull, and move a minimum of 30 pounds.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to deal with a variety of variables under limited standardization. Able to interpret various instructions and relay instructions to clients.
  • Attendance is an essential duty of the position. Employees must work regularly scheduled shifts, during business hours to assist members and sell services in-person.

This position description intends to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this job. It is not intended to include all duties and responsibilities. The order in which duties and responsibilities are listed is not significant.
