Staff Engineer, Design Engineering
Req ID: 137071
Region: Americas
Country: USA
State/Province: Texas
City: Richardson

Summary

The Signal Integrity Test Engineer plays a key role in high-speed digital PCB development with a strong focus on signal integrity validation and testing. This includes planning and executing lab measurements, analyzing eye diagrams, loss, impedance, jitter, and troubleshooting SI issues on completed designs. The role drives correlation between simulation and lab results, supports compliance testing, and provides critical input during design reviews to ensure robust signal performance. Strong communication skills are required to work effectively with global teams.
The engineer designs and develops electrical systems and circuits, translating concepts into schematics and specifications, while ensuring designs meet signal integrity requirements through simulation and lab validation. They own system bring-up, testing, qualification, and continuous optimization based on measurement data. This role works closely with cross-functional teams-including design, manufacturing, and customers-to deliver high-quality products, and continuously improves designs using feedback from testing, manufacturing, reliability, and system validation results.

Detailed Description

  • Key Responsibilities:
    • Lead signal integrity validation and characterization of high-speed systems, including hands-on lab testing of digital interfaces and full channel measurements.
    • Define and execute measurement strategies using oscilloscopes, VNAs, TDRs, and BERTs to evaluate eye diagrams, loss, impedance, jitter, and bit error rate.
    • Drive correlation between simulation and lab measurements, identifying gaps and improving model accuracy to ensure first-pass design success.
    • Oversee physical layer compliance testing (e.g., PCIe, Ethernet, DDR) and ensure designs meet industry standards and margin requirements.
    • Troubleshoot complex signal integrity issues using measurement data, root cause analysis, and systematic debug methodologies.
    • Provide technical leadership on SI validation best practices, guiding teams on measurement techniques, test setups, and data interpretation.
    • Review system architecture, schematics, and layouts with a focus on testability and signal integrity performance.
    • Partner with design, manufacturing, and suppliers to develop test plans, fixtures, and validation strategies that enable accurate and repeatable measurements.
    • Contribute to project execution by aligning validation plans with schedules, resources, and customer requirements.
    • Document and communicate test results, analysis, and recommendations to stakeholders, supporting design decisions and continuous improvement.
    • Stay current with emerging SI validation techniques, tools, and industry standards to enhance lab capabilities and measurement accuracy.

Physical Demands

  • Duties of this position are performed in a normal office environment.
  • Duties may require extended periods of sitting and sustained visual concentration on a computer monitor or on numbers and other detailed data.
  • Repetitive manual movements (e.g., data entry, using a computer mouse, using a calculator, etc.) are frequently required.
  • Occasional travel may be required.

Typical Experience

  • Doctorate in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience OR
  • Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience OR
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field AND 12+ years technical engineering experience OR equivalent experience.
