What's the role?

The Buyer team at Etsy is focused on creating inspiring, seamless, and trustworthy shopping experiences that help millions of people discover and purchase unique items from creative entrepreneurs around the world. We believe craft excellence, experimentation, and strong design foundations are critical to bringing our mission to life.

In this role, you will design high-impact buyer-facing experiences across key moments in the shopping journey - from discovery and evaluation to checkout and post-purchase. You'll work in close collaboration with cross-functional partners in engineering, research, analytics, marketing, and product management to find opportunities, define solutions, and deliver measurable impact.

This is a full-time position reporting to the Senior Director of Product Design, Growth. In addition to salary, you will also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family as part of your total rewards package at Etsy.

For this role, we are considering candidates based in the United States. Candidates living within commutable distance of Etsy's Brooklyn Office Hub may be the first to be considered. For candidates within commutable distance, Etsy requires in-office attendance once or twice per week depending on your proximity to the office. Etsy offers different work modes to meet the variety of needs and preferences of our team. Learn more details about our work modes and workplace safety policies here.

What's this team like at Etsy?

Product designers at Etsy work in a squad alongside a product manager, 4-6 engineers, a researcher, and a data analyst. Together, they drive a significant part of the buyer experience by identifying problems, shipping solutions, and learning directly from customer behavior and feedback.

On the Buyer team, we:
  • Focus on delivering high-quality, intuitive, and inspiring shopping experiences at global scale.
  • Operate with a strong culture of experimentation and iteration, using research and data to inform decisions.
  • Care deeply about craft, accessibility, consistency, and scalable systems.
  • Share work early and often, giving and receiving thoughtful feedback to continuously set the standard.

What does the day-to-day look like?
  • Set the Bar for Design Excellence - Champion visual and interaction design quality across experiences, defining what "great" looks like and ensuring Etsy feels simple, trustworthy, expressive, and delightful.
  • Lead End-to-End Experience Design - Own sophisticated, high-impact buyer journeys across exploration, discovery, evaluation, and purchase-balancing customer needs, business goals, and technical constraints.
  • Drive Strategy Through Design - Develop product direction in early-stage work by leading workshops, design sprints, and concept explorations that help teams align on vision, requirements, and long-term outcomes.
  • Design at a Systems Level - Audit and refine existing experiences, contributing to and evolving our design system to ensure scalability, consistency, and excellence across the buyer ecosystem.
  • Drive Experimentation & Iteration - Partner with Product, Engineering and Analytics to build experiments, interpret results, and iterate based on insights-using both qualitative and quantitative signals to guide decisions.
  • Explore Future-Looking Solutions - Bring curiosity and fresh thinking by exploring new interaction patterns, motion, storytelling, and new technologies (including generative AI) that elevate buyer experiences.
  • Influence Across Teams and Organizations - Clearly articulate design rationale, trade-offs, and system value to audiences ranging from peers to senior leadership-helping teams make better, more customer-centered decisions.
  • Of course, this is just a sample of the kinds of work this role will require! You should assume that your role will encompass other tasks, too, and that your job duties and responsibilities may change from time to time at Etsy's discretion, or otherwise applicable with local law.

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:
  • 7+ years of professional product design experience, with deep expertise designing native mobile experiences.
  • Exceptional visual and interaction design skills, proven through a portfolio showcasing high-quality UI, end-to-end flows, system thinking, and scalable solutions.
  • Proven experience designing complex, high-traffic consumer experiences in areas such as discovery, commerce, or marketplaces.
  • Collaboration skills-with a track record of close partnership with engineers to ensure high-quality execution.
  • Excellent communication and storytelling skills with the ability to influence and align diverse collaborators.
  • A strategic, proactive mindset-comfortable navigating ambiguity, crafting clarity, and driving initiatives forward independently.

As a Staff Designer, you will be expected to:
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners to define vision and strategy.
  • Set interaction design standards and resolve complex interaction challenges.
  • Develop prototypes to clarify product strategy and influence organizational priorities.
  • Apply soft skills like listening, negotiating, and decision-making.
  • Drive design thinking and product innovation across various time horizons, setting long-term goals while delivering near-term solutions.
