At General Motors, our Software Quality Automation organization is building an integrated quality ecosystem where requirements flow into BTS and script generation, coverage tools feed continuous improvement, and everything is stitched together through platforms such as TriadHub, HyperBTSgen, GM ScriptGen, BTS Quality Analyzer, BDDU/BDDbot, coverage analytics, and software visualization.

This team plays a key role in scaling software quality, DevOps maturity, and engineering productivity across VEST, EPSI, and VMEC. Our work enables high test coverage, stronger software quality signals, faster system-test readiness, improved CI/CD effectiveness, and end-to-end traceability from requirements through validation outcomes.

By joining this team, you will help shape and scale the tooling strategy that connects software quality automation, system testing, traceability, and platform enablement across multiple engineering organizations.

The Role

This is a senior Level 8 Individual Contributor role for a recognized technical leader in DevOps, software quality automation, and engineering tooling.

As a Staff DevOps Software Quality Automation Tooling Engineer, you will define technical direction, lead complex cross-functional initiatives, and develop scalable tooling solutions that improve software quality automation maturity across GM engineering teams. You will operate with a high degree of independence and influence, partnering across Software Quality Automation, Systems Engineering, ARTs, platform teams, and product organizations to solve broad, complex problems.

The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in CI/CD, system-test enablement, test automation, coverage analytics, tooling integration, and traceability, along with the ability to connect technical strategy to measurable business and engineering outcomes.

What You'll Do

  • Define and drive the technical vision for DevOps and Software Quality Automation tooling across the software development lifecycle.
  • Architect and evolve tooling that connects requirements, BTS generation, script generation, test execution, coverage feedback, and software quality reporting.
  • Lead large cross-functional initiatives that improve test effectiveness, test efficiency, traceability, and system-test readiness across multiple ARTs and organizations.
  • Design and implement scalable CI/CD and automation solutions that improve engineering productivity, release confidence, and feedback quality.
  • Support and influence the transition of System Testing into ART ownership, helping reduce duplicate solution-in-context work and accelerate movement to system-level validation.
  • Establish and improve tools and workflows that strengthen end-to-end traceability from requirements through validation outcomes using platforms such as TriadHub.
  • Partner with teams across VEST, EPSI, VMEC, Systems Engineering, and Software Quality to align tooling roadmaps, priorities, and adoption strategies.
  • Identify gaps in quality tooling, automation, and workflow integration, and create practical solutions that improve coverage, signal quality, and engineering consistency.
  • Define, track, and influence KPIs related to tool adoption, test coverage, signal effectiveness, CI/CD throughput, and strategic quality outcomes.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for software quality automation, DevOps tooling, BTS quality, BDDU/BDDbot enablement, and platform integration.
  • Mentor engineers and influence technical decisions across teams without direct authority.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related technical field.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in DevOps, CI/CD, software quality automation, test automation tooling, or engineering productivity tooling.
  • Strong experience designing and implementing scalable automation frameworks, pipelines, and internal tooling solutions.
  • Demonstrated success leading technically complex initiatives across multiple teams, ARTs, or organizations.
  • Experience with system-test enablement, quality measurement, test coverage analysis, and tooling strategy.
  • Strong systems-thinking and architecture capability, with the ability to connect tooling investments to engineering and business outcomes.
  • Experience operating independently in ambiguous environments and driving execution with limited oversight.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills, including the ability to influence direction across organizational boundaries.
  • Proven ability to identify improvement opportunities, solve complex technical problems, and drive adoption of new methods and tools.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in embedded software, platform validation, or software-defined vehicle development environments.
  • Experience with GM-relevant tooling domains
  • Experience establishing technical standards, KPIs, and maturity models for quality automation and DevOps.
  • Experience supporting cross-ART system testing, test-pyramid implementation, and CI/CD quality integration.
  • Experience mentoring senior engineers or serving as a technical lead across broad initiatives.

Internal Only Job Specifications

  • This role is intended for candidates who can operate as a technical multiplier across organizations, not just within a single team.
  • The position requires strong familiarity with GM software quality workflows, ART operating models, and cross-functional platform/tooling collaboration.
  • Success in this role will be measured through visible impact on tool adoption, traceability, quality signal effectiveness, test coverage, and system-test enablement across VEST, EPSI, and VMEC.
  • Prior experience working across quality automation, systems engineering, and platform/tooling initiatives in GM or a similar large-scale engineering environment is strongly preferred.

Compensation:

The salary range for this role is $ 137,300 to $ 206,000. The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.
