Full Job Description
The Team:

Upstart's Personal Loans Underwriting and Credit Analytics team is responsible for building, improving, and monitoring Upstart's core underwriting model. This model powers our decisions on which loans to approve and at what rates, and as such, it is central to the company's success.

As a Staff Data Analyst at Upstart, you will own the monitoring and reporting of model and credit performance for Personal Loans. This role provides regular visibility to senior leadership and plays a key role in shaping data-driven decisions at the highest levels of the organization.

In addition to owning recurring reporting and performance tracking, this role requires strong analytical curiosity and investigative rigor. You will proactively monitor portfolio and model performance, identify emerging trends, diagnose unexpected outcomes, and ultimately recommend actionable treatments. This role is well-suited for someone who enjoys going beyond standard reporting to conduct deep analytical investigations and drive meaningful business impact.

How you'll make an impact
  • Own credit and performance monitoring for the Personal Loans product
  • Identify performance trends and go deeper to understand root causes and recommend targeted treatments
  • Perform rigorous statistical analyses to evaluate past experiments and natural experiments
  • Build and maintain workflows that automate and scale standard reporting

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree in a quantitative field (e.g., Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Finance, Operations Research, Physics, or related field)
  • Experience with Python and SQL
  • Strong analytical and first-principles thinking, with the ability to tackle complex and ambiguous problems
  • Strong communication, presentation, and collaboration skills; especially with the ability to clearly articulate complex analytical concepts to diverse audiences
  • 6+ years of experience in analytics, data science, or a related quantitative field.

Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD in a quantitative field (e.g., Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Finance, Operations Research, Physics, or related)
  • Experience and familiarity with finance, especially as it related to lending

Position location This role is available in the following locations: Remote

Time zone requirements The team operates on time zones ranging from EST to PST.

Travel requirements As a digital first company, the majority of your work can be accomplished remotely. The majority of our employees can live and work anywhere in the U.S or Canada (outside of Quebec) but are expected to spend high quality time in-person collaborating via regular onsites and in-person meetings. The onsite cadence varies depending on the team and role; most teams meet once or twice per quarter for 2-4 consecutive days at a time.

At Upstart, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. The anticipated base salary for this position is expected to be within the below range. Your actual base pay will depend on your geographic location-with our "digital first" philosophy, Upstart uses compensation regions that vary depending on location. Individual pay is also determined by job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.

In addition, Upstart provides employees with target bonuses, equity compensation, and generous benefits packages (including medical, dental, vision, and 401k).

United States | Remote - Anticipated Base Salary Range

$157,000-$217,500 USD
